Langrenus and "children" at bedtime new
      #1944590 - 10/28/07 10:50 PM Attachment (30 downloads)

It was a classic fall night after a front passage--complete with gusty winds, high turbulence, wave clouds coming and going, and cooling temperatures. Little SCTs are not real steady under those conditions and this one sometimes has mind of it's own, but I still managed a sketch between resetting my target and waiting for "clear spots". The consolation is that I can sketch inside a star shed out of the wind and cold. Sometimes a challenge is good.

Roland,

An excellent observation of Langrenus and "children." You have captured the appearance of this crater and environs well. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Wonderful sketch Roland. I'm not sure what I enjoy most, your beautiful sketches or the notes, observations, musings and passages that you attach with them. Hope to see some more "his" and "hers" soon.

Thanks, Kev. I am glad you enjoy the "other" part. When I do sketches, a sketch (to me) is the sketch AND the notes plus personal notes. Part of it is my science/engineering training, but a lot is wanting to share the wonderful lessons and applications that I (in an often definite sense) receive. Usually when I saunter out to the scope, I am asking God for guidance..."teach me something" is my usual question. So if you look at my book of sketches, which I use for other purposes outside of CN, they include what you see: a page that includes a sketch, notes, tech stuff, usually a personal note, a little "fancy work" to set up the page. The credit cannot really go to me; I sense His pleasure in doing it. Things are different every night, however. Some are hard work and toil to get it done; some are easy and fast. But all display something (hopefully) if the glory of the created heavens. If you had asked me five years ago that I would walk off my observing pad nearly laughing with glee at the wonder of it all, I would have said you were crazy. But, its happening!! I've only been observing 7 years and sketching less than a year.

My wife joined me a few months after I started. Again, I had no idea that we would do something like this together. It's real charge to do this together.

I just noticed that you don't observe through the eyepiece but through a monitor. How do you obtain all the different magnifications? Barlows or does the camera do all the magnification? Beautiful skecth BTW.

Lee, the camera with a plain nose piece gives you an 8mm equivalent. An added focal reducer and extenstion give you two more combinations at 9 and 12.5. I almost always stay with the 12.5 combination to reduce changes. However, there is also an electronic zoom that is easy to button-enter or adjust so I can easily change from 12.5 to about 6.25. Then, I can also use a Barlow, which I use only on very small objects or small lunar targets when the seeing is worth the effort. Then I can go from 2mm (really beyond the capability of usefulness) to about 6. Bottom line for me: keep the focal reducer attached, which performs well, and adjust the electronic zoom, which also does very well. This provides 12.5 to 6.25 quickly and easily. Planets, small planetaries, and lunar detail on good nights ... then I had a TV 2 inch Barlow.

With these cameras, keeping a best combination the same really helps because one still has to reset the field of view slightly, which interrupts sketching enough by itself. I run two monitors. One at the scope where I do adjustments, and the second protected from weather about 12 feet away where I do the sketching. May sound complicated, but I have established a system of steps that are plain and fast to do. One always wants to minimize non-sketching time.

Thanks for the compliments.
