On November 1st I tried to get a deep exposure of Comet Holmes to see if I could pick up any tail. I did 12 exposures of 180 seconds each at ISO 1600. I used a GSO 8in F/4 newt and my modified DSLR.
Here's the normal color image, but greatly contrast enhanced and stretched:

And this greyscale negative view shows it better:
Thanks for looking. Hope ya'll like them.

Thanks Mike, I was wondering about the tail. Speaking of which. Did you happen to catch a while back APODs POD showing a series of photos (actually an animated sequence) of a solar blast stripping away the tail of a comet. It was really cool.

Thanks guys.
I know there are a few images showing the tail out there, but I just had to see for myself what was possible here at home.
I was lucky to get that much of it with all the LP around here. For most of the early evening, the comet rises right in the middle of a very strong LP dome from a bigger city northeast of where I live. I waited for it to get away from that as much as possible before shooting the long exposures.
Dave, I must of missed that APOD when it came out. I'll check the archives and see if I can find it.

That is pretty cool! Spectacular, even!
I sure wish the tail was more apparent on Holmes, but even without a bright visual tail, it is still great. Last night I was observing it visually with, appropriately enough, a 5.5" F/3.8 Celestron Comet Catcher and a 20mm Plossel. It was breathtaking!

Great image Mike! This tail is quite interesting. Why didn't you go for any longer exposures? (e.g. 300s or even 600s).
Oh and happy birthday!

Thanks, Peter.
I had to stop at 180 sec because I hit mid-histogram shooting in that area of the sky from my location. It would have been no use to try longer exposures. In certain parts of the sky I can go 300 sec, but I don't get much more than the 180 sec would give me.
Last night I tried to see if I could get more of the tail. Check out this image made with 20x180 sec @ ISO 1600 subs:
A little better than my last try, I think. I'm happy with it.
