This is just my first year for comet processing so Im tyring to learn from the pro's here. That and I've been fighting this CG5 mount...(its about time to upgrade!)
Anyway, enough with the excuses, here is my attempt. This is only a comet align. i will try to freeze the stars and comet and post later.
Excellent shots and reports everyone. Thank you.

Beautiful pics, Pete. Bill, your sketch is great, far more detailed than I could observe with my 10".

I must admit, being an imager these days and not having sketched for years, I'm very impressed at the standard of sketching being presented here. Excellent job everyone.

Well, here is my final. Took several pictures last night and used DSS to freeze the stars and comet. My focus was off as well I noticed. Along with a new mount I need find a good focusing method.

I'm in the northeast, US, at 7:30 pm, December 31, with a pair of 10x50 binoculars, having a tough time finding Tuttle. Is there an ideal time tonight to spot it?

You should be well set right now (it's 5:30ish pm PST, so 8:30ish pm there). Tuttle was visible but not blazing in my 50mm finder last night. If you can get away from any street lights you'll be better off.
Keep searching but go slow. It's easy to slide past it if you go too fast.
Clear skies.

To All
Made my second observation last evening (12/31) of Comet Tuttle. It took about an hour to locate this faint blob of light. Part of the problem was a rather bright sky. In my 10" refl at 38x Tuttle appears as a ghostly patch of light, not much brighter then the background sky, roundish in shape but with no noticeable brightening toward the center, averted vision seemed to help. At 76x Tuttle was somewhat easier to see, appearing somewhat brighter toward the center. At 174x a central condensation was confirmed. The Central Condensation (CC) was rated between 1 and 2. At least for me, this was a challenging comet to observe.

I was unsuccessful in sweeping up 8P/Tuttle with a 10x50 binocular last night from a somewhat light polluted suburban location under less than tranparent skies. 17P/Holmes, however, was faintly visible.
See http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=36440&d=1199080382 for a great widefield image of the two periodic comets.

I, too, was unable to sight Tuttle with my 10x50s. While here in the northeast the skies were clear and crisp on the 31st, I am contending with a bit of urban light pollution, which I think was the problem in the end. And once the constellations move too far to the west (direction of the town), I'm out of luck.
I enjoyed looking at others' photos and successes, as well as links to recent images of the comets. Thanks.

I have a final version image of the Tuttle/M33 encounter I'd like to share. I posted this in the DSLR forum, but I think it is worth reposting here for those who don't visit that area. Check it out:

Is there a larger version of this image?
And I agree with everyone else - Mike, that image is SWEET.

The rest of you folks aint bad either, but I gotta have a bias towards a fellow Louisiana observer.
