Nexstar 4 SE - Your Opinions, Suggestion, Alts.
      #1981758 - 11/13/07 09:40 AM

Hi Guys,

I've been doing casual amateur astronomy for 15+ years and I'm looking to buy my first telescope! All my observations have been made with the naked eye, binoculars or digital camera. Although I've never owned a telescope I feel quite familiar with them due to the amount of time I've been into it. So I'm happy with the concepts of designs, optics, mounts, etc.

My reasons for being interested in the Nexstar SE line are because they appear to balance convienience, performance, ease of use, portability and price very well. I can see myself using one of these on a near daily basis. Where as I would see myself using a 10-12" dobsonian much less frequently. I'm thinking I'll get a large reflector as a second scope in the future.

In an ideal world I would be looking to buy an 8" goto scope that would be nice for naked eye and digital photography, solar system and deep sky. However, I live in England and telescope prices are not as favourable as they are in the States. I don't really want to spend over $1000.

These are the best prices I can get:

Celestron Nexstar 4 SE £340 ($715)
Celestron Nexstar 5 SE £575 ($1,210)
Celestron Nexstar 6 SE £670 ($1,410)
Celestron Nexstar 8 SE £1,045 ($2,199)

Celestron C6 SGT £775 ($1631)
Celestron C8 SGT £1,298 ($2732)

Meade ETX 90 PE £429 ($903)
Meade ETX 105 PE £630 ($1,326)
Meade ETX 125 PE £780 ($1,641)

The used market is not exactly big here either. However, I may be able to get a used Meade ETX 125, with accessories, for around £450 ($947). So do you thing that would be a better idea than getting the Nexstar 4 SE?

I would like to know how the Nexstar 4 SE performs for naked eye and digital photography. Do you think the visual quality would end up annoying me? How much planetary detail am I likely to see? How would observations of Saturn's and Jupiter's moons be? Is there any chance of acceptable, not stunning, deep sky photography? I live in an area with low light pollution and pretty good atmospheric conditions more often than not.

Also, are the Celestron lens/filter and CCD accesory kits, for this series, good quality and value?

I would be very grateful for any comments, suggestions, advice or help you can give me. I have only found one review of the Nexstar 4 SE and I couldn't draw much conclusion from that.

Thanks.

yes, i'm from barcelona, spain so same situation, i find a nexstar 8i in ebay at 900€ (1200$) shipping incl. but i had to wait 4 months looking in internet for it.

if i were you i will buy the 6SE, because the 4" is a Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope, and the 5,6,8 are a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes. I have a 4" telescope, really boring for me. You need very good skies to see something with it. I saw jupiter with the 4" like a little point and with 4 moons around it with a very good sky nothing more spectacular. so my option is go for something bigger than 5".

good luck!

Hi and welcome to CN,

Looking at your budget, I think I'd go for something along the lines of the GoTo Celestron C8NGT at £595. Certainly good for DSOs and with a decent Barlow it would be reasonably effective for planetary studies.

Additionally being EQ mounted, it would I think, lend itself well towards astrophotography.

Hope this helps to start the ball rolling,

Best regards,

Cheers for the replies dudes.

I have researched the 4 SE quite heavily now and have decided to get it. I'm fully aware why bigger is better and that's why I'll get a large aperture scope in the future. Getting one of the larger scopes suggested is gonna cost nearly double that of the 4 SE. Plus I want to buy other accessories like power pack, webcam, camera adapters, couple of eyepieces, moon & sun filters, etc.

So, right now I'm pretty confident that the 4 SE will satisfy my needs and pay for itself with enjoyment had. I have good skies and as long as it does what is says on the tin I'll be happy. I don't think I'm under any illusions as to it's capability. It'll be a good upgrade from 7x50 bino's!

Really I just wanted to be confident that the optics were good and there was no construction or reliability issues.

I'll probably order one today. I'll update this thread when I get it for future reference for others.

Thanks for the kind offer, man, but I've ordered one now. How are you finding it anyway? I got quite a good deal, £325 delivered including a PSU and batteries.

Cheers dude, I had seen that guys pictures. They helped me to make my decision to buy the 4 SE.

Other items I have ordered:

Antares 1.5x/2x Barlow,
Antares 9mm Kellner,
Antares 20mm Super Plossl,
Antares 32mm Super Plossl,
Antares adjustable polarising filter.

Philips SPC 900NC webcam,
1.25" adapter for the webcam,
Baader UV/IR Cut Filter.

I got good deals on everything except the IR filter, so that lot cost about £140.

Main items I've got pencilled in on the to get list are:

Power Pack,
40mm Plossl,
Cleaning/Maintenance Kit,
Solar Filter,
Dew Shield.

Are there any items I have overlooked, essential or non-essential?

For astrophotography I plan to connect the scope and camera to a laptop then run master control from a desktop inside via WiFi.

Another cool thing I have found is the NexStar's communication protocol on the Celestron site. I can code so I see a lot of convenient possibilities open up. I'm wanting to make a program that will attempt to track the ISS so I can try to get some shots! I just need to find some accurate positional data... I also plan to SC mod the webcam...

Any telescope noob suggestions, advice or pitfalls to avoid are welcome.

My NexStar 4 SE has been delivered. Surprisingly the sky is solid cloud.

If you're in England I fully recommend Sherwoods, the firm I got the scope from. Great service and value.

I'll report back when the sky is clear...

Glad to see it's looking good - we'll get some clear skies soon (I hope)

I'm looking to do much the same as you with regard to remote control for decent A-photography. Oh, and I've made myself a rather nice solar filter - so the offer of meeting up some time still sands if we're vaguely close at any point.

I'd suggest you take a look at stellarium.org - it's open surce planetarium software - and just happend to have a module for the NexStar comms protocol.

I'm Hoping For Clear Skies Tonight! new [Re: DeltaBlues]
      #2003953 - 11/23/07 07:46 AM

First Impressions - Brief Report:

The NexStar 4 SE is very quick and simple to assemble, I can't see anyone having trouble putting it together. The retro tube colouring is not the bright orange that it appears to be in pictures. In fact it's a kind of dark metallic burnt copper type colour. Nice. It looks even cooler than the pics.

I'm very impressed with the build quality of the whole rig. But obviously I can't assess how the motors and electronics will stand up to the test of time yet. Everything seems to have been manufactured to a very high standard. I get a feeling of quality from all of it. I imagine the only problems I may have will be due to user error!

Since I got the 4SE the sky has been solid cloud... The last time this happened was ages ago... So, I have not been able to align the mount. I have familiarised myself with different alignment methods the telescope offers and I'm confident I won't have any problem setting it up both as an alt-azimuth and an equatorial when the skies clear.

During brief breaks in the cloud I have been able to observe the moon through the 4SE. With the stock 4SE 25mm eyepiece you can see the whole moon with a small border of sky all around it.

The moon looks stunning! My polarising filter hasn't turned up yet so I had to use sunglasses! The view through the 4SE is amazingly good. Razor sharp definition and contrast. No visible colour aberrations or distortions at all. I'm really liking this Maksutov-Cassegrain design, I can't wait to check out the other objects it excels at optically.

This Mak design also means the only maintenance required is cleaning. No collimation has got to be a very nice feature for a hassle free scope. And I can rest happy that my optics are always in "perfect" alignment.

Bearing in mind that I'm still on the honeymoon period and have not tested the 4SE to anywhere near its max capability, I kinda feel that calling this scope a "beginners scope" seems to do it an injustice. -- I'm sure many experienced astronomers would find this scope very worthwhile and a pleasure to use. -- However, saying that, I think you'd be very hard pushed to find a "beginners scope" that beats the 4SE. It's the kind of scope that would really intensify a novices interest in astronomy, not kill it.

I also can't wait to start doing some astrophotography. I've got my remote control setup sorted out and I'm just waiting for the cam adapter to arrive. Hopefully it will be today.

Late last night the sky turned very clear. It was too late to setup but with the naked eye Mars was very bright. I was gagging to use the scope. Checking the satellite weather data today this weekend is potentially looking good for observing. I will report back fully when I have got in some decent observing sessions and can make a proper assessment. Here's hoping for clear skies...

I wouldn't call it a beginner's scope. I'd call it portable.

Ouch! Prices in the UK are through the roof!

Tell you what. Take a trip to the US. Right now you can pick up a brand new 125-ETX Premier for $698. The Celestron Nexstar 4SE new goes for $599. One US internet outlet store has them on sale for under $500. I'd go with minimum the 6SE. And it has far better mechanics than the ETX. The 6 is selling for $999 and occasionally there are $100 factory rebates. I figure with the money you'll save, it will help to pay for your trip.

One piece of equipment i would add is a good chair. If you like your 4SE and spend long hours using it, it will increase your pleasure and endurance. The dew shiled is a must especially if you are living in a city with light pollution.

You may go to the CN scope review, I wrote with my limited english a report concerning the N4GT, its abilities and possibilities with some improvements about.
The difference between a GT and a SE is only the HC version where the SE has a better tracting accuracy.
Just for finishing, it's not roughly a scope for beginner.
I know some beginners who goes through for a 20" dob and after with troubles in use.
4" aperture already a great one for viewing and starting imaging seriously.

I don't know what is lpc, but answers are given in the review.
The scope has on mine good optics, for dso in town you should forget, at the mountains you are in a 4", mak doesn'matter, on planets too.
This is a general comment for any aperture.
