Last weekend I had some clear skies so I went to my usual site northwest of town. After spending an hour observing and drawing Comet P/17Holmes, I decided to check out some galaxies, and among them was this pair in Pisces, NGC-470 and 474. Both were elongated into ovals with brighter centers and were fairly easy to see through my 10-inch despite the light pollution affecting the site. NGC-470 was definitely the easier of the two to discern. After observing and sketching these two, I looked at other galaxies in the area, including NGC-520, 524, 488 and 660 along with M-74. For those with a 8 or 10-inch Dob, there's a fair number of galaxies that are not very hard to see in Pisces and a few that look really good even from less than perfect skies.

Not only is that a great sketch Taras, I now have two more objects to add to my "want to see" list.

Taras,
Galaxies in pairs and groups are always fun to see and this is a fantastic sketch you made of this nice pair. Thanks for posting.

Thanks Wade and Frank.....pairs of galaxies are among my favorite objects to observe. Triplets and quartets are even higher on my objects to observe list.

Taras,
An excellent observation of an interesting pair of glaxies in Pisces. NGC 470 is a barred spiral and NGC 474 is a lenticular galaxy. The pair is also known as Arp 227. A pair of quasars have been discovered near this pair. These galaxies are approximately 100 million light years from us. Thank you for sharing this observation with us all.

Thanks John. I do sketch at least a couple of objects every time I go out to a darker site than my home. In fact I've drawn hundreds of DSO's over the past few years. My interest in this is not just to become a better observer, but to keep a record of what I observe and to track light pollution spread.

Your sketches convinced me too...they are on my list. I have never observed them but I sure liked your observation. Roland
