      #2018532 - 11/30/07 04:49 AM

I have a very good Nokia 6300 phone that accept Symbian and Java software.I just find some interesting games and programs for my phone, but I would like to have a few astro-software.The phone accept all the programs with the "jar." extensions.I would really apreciate if somebody can help me with software or links.

I'm browsing for the same! Try this software site and link http://www.getjar.com/software/Nokia/6300

That will turn up some, including Planisphere. I haven't tried any of these--- my phone is just now charging for the first time.

Also google for java astronomy or java planetarium... I found several programs that way, but many are older and run on computers not phones.

You might also want to try the big name software sites (Starry Night, The Sky, etc.) and see if they have a phone version. IIRC, The Sky did and even advertised it in Sky & Telescope.

One thing that is a downer about some of the programs is that they require internet connection and fetching data-- which will eat up battery life and could cost $$$!

Better to have it all on the phone itself-- but I don't know if phones, unlike PDAs, have enough oomph to do this! (I'm not talking smartphones-- a la Treos--which are essentially PDA/phones.

I'm sure there's some out there. I doubt that I'll use my phone at the scope (why wear down a battery on something that I really need in a pinch? And especially given that I have several PDAs that work wonderfully with Planetarium!)

I also just found this web blurb and it has comments, too! http://tinyurl.com/36wda9

And this listing of several programs, though they seem to be for Java on your desktop/laptop

http://www.mathtools.net/Java/Astronomy/index.html

Still, it's fascinating... I'm also exploring book readers: Libris, ReadManiac, etc. Just don't quite understand yet how to install things on a phone!

Oh, and one more

MobileStarChart at http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=135704

and a link to what could be the same, Mobile Planetarium for Java Phones at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mobilestarchart/

and MicroSky
http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Science/Astronomy/MicroSky-13765.shtml

If you end up trying some, please post back on your experiences! I'll do the same. Maybe we can help others (and each other) find the good ones! And explain the tricks, tips, and pitfalls of installation and use!

MobileStarChart is the one!! new [Re: Astraforce Paul]

I have now tried the following-- MobileStarChart-- with NGC objects added. http://tinyurl.com/32yrzq

It is brilliant! Incredibly well executed, with keypad controls for key options. The screen is aesthetically pleasing, the controls intuitive, the various options are readily controlled, etc. There's even an optional red screen mode.

The programmer(s) deserves heaps of praise. This reminds me of Planetarium on the Palm with its intuitive interface.

One big plus this has is the ability to display Messier and NGC object labels!

All you have to do is download the file linked to "Minor Fixes" (it's not an update-- it's the full program with NGC objects & Messier.) You simply unzip it and then bluetooth send it to your phone. I'm using a Nokia 6085. It automatically ends up in the applications (well games) folder where you can set your location options, etc.

Oh, and in spite of the screen shots elsewhere on the net, you can get a wonderful horizon view, just as in real life, and all those other planetarium type programs. (Or optionally, display a full sky view.)

Try it, I'm sure you'll like it!!
