music while watching
      #2020438 - 12/01/07 12:49 AM

Ok slightly of topic but what music do people like to listen to when stargazing?
Looking for some new music ideas for my mp3 player.

I like to absorb the nature sounds and smells that are infinitely complex and soothing.

I prefer night sounds, but when the weather gets cold the forest quiets down a lot, and that's when I bring along the mp3.

My favorite stargazing music is anything by Jonn Serrie, and I've downloaded some Apollo transmissions for lunar observing. I generally like quiet music, but when the neighbor's dog starts barking I switch over to something less quiet like Janis Joplin or The Doors.

None. I like the "peace and quiet" of nature when I observe, (animals, wind, tiny things, etc). Deal with too much human "noise" during the day and observing is my escape so they don't mix very well.

With all due respect to Simon and Garfunkel, I like the "Sound of Silence" as my viewing music also is nature's sounds (back indoors - I wanna rock... ).

Now I listen a lot to music, I play music, record music and so on.
when it comes down to stargazing, I actually can't be bothered.
Sometimes I leave a jazztune or some ambientwork on in the house wich will reach to my observingspot just softly.
But in the end I like the quiet and the sounds of the night.

I also think that music will distract from watchin or might skip you some detail, as you are getting complex input into your ears whilst trying to make out tiny detail with your eyes.

I believe these are all connected so too much info for the ears will give less attention to the eyes and vice versa.
I've noticed this when I had my stereo on on a nice listeningvolume in a bright illuminated tune, now when I dim the lights, the music suddenly get's louder as my instincts rely more on my ears in this situation then on my eyes so my ears get more attentive, so the nice listeningvolume is not the same anymore in the darkened room then in the bright room.
So i'm guessing the same effect will occur when I'm trying to watch something, if there's to much noise my attention to vision will diminish, this might only be very slightly but when trying to make out detail through a telescope every bit helps

now am I crazy??? maybe a little but hey!
Oh a good deal of the songs on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland album accompany starfields very well. If you're into that.

Carol, I guess it would be hard to keep your eye over the eyepiece during lunar observations with "Moondance" or "Dancing in the Moonlight" playing ...

Actually Mark, the neighbors' dog isn't the only reason I change from Serrie to something more invigorating. Sometimes I switch to rock and go 'Dancing with the Stars' to stay warm or oxygenate my blood for a better chance at detecting those low surface brightness objects.

Hoi everybody,

Thanks for all the surgestions, now I have a whole lot of new stuff to listen to while looking and not having to listen to the sounds of surburbia.
As for those who prefer nature sounds, yes that is nice but the only nature sounds I hear when I grab the binoculars or scope for a quick hour of viewing are the ones that play on my MP3. That is why I prefer to listen to music.

Hi, I have a Paramount mount, even when tracking its makes a very irritating noise like a mis-tuned short-wave receiver.
I MUST hear to a different sound, real music, I often MP3 Vangelis, Mike Oldfield.

At daytime and early in the evening I like to hear to MW radiostation 'Big L' (west-Europe only) at 1395 khz (or on their website), they play all kinds of popsongs from the 50's to present.

You might want to disassemble, clean and lubricate that mount... I can't imagine putting up with the noise, or turning a radio up enough to override the sound.

Welcome to CN, by the way. Your homeland is one of my favorite places...

I listen to the same stuff I do during the day. Mostly vocal trance like DJ Tiesto, Jes, or anything in that line. Or if the mood strikes I might listen to some country (Sara Evans, Sugarland, Little Big Town) or 80s pop. I listen a wide range of music. Beethoven or Schubert is also a possibility.

Even better than BigL, I've spent many enjoyable evenings observing the moon whilst listening to Radio Caroline on my wireless headphones, via their internet streams. Classic rock in stereo!

Hi RandyR, the annoying noise from my Paramount is fully normal, even the 'tics-sound' emitting from the build-in loudspeaker is normal according to the manual.
Inside my home (or in a dome!) its even more annoying.
A Paramount mount is great for imaging not for observing.

Same as Mark, I prefer nature. I mentioned in the other thread that I enjoy listening to the neighborhood owl, well there are two now, seems like they're singing to each other.

When I at a dark site away from civilization I too prefer the sounds of nature. But I mostly observe from my balcony and there I can hear cars, people taking etc. and thats were I really like listening to music. I preferably listen to classic music when observing since i think it is the most adequate and relaxing but from time to time I don mind a little power metal (which is my favorite kind of music).
