I was thinking of geting the PST with the $100 rebate, but I am not sure if it is better than what I currently use. Currently I use the Orion StarMax 127 with a glass solar filter. This enables me to see the sun with a few sun spots. Will the PST show any surface detail or prominances visually or do you need to use photographs to bring out the detail ?

You can see plenty of surface and prominence detail, I have no idea what you're comparing it to though...

Fishman, You cannot compare whitelight viewing to H-Alpha viewing. It is a totally different view. You will see prominances(but the Sun is near min. now) & surface detail. Where in NJ are you? If your close to Bedminster I'll gladly show you views with my PST.

The views through a PST are different as told above. You can definitely see prominences with a PST. I have mine double stacked so I don't remember what all the differences in views are but the prominences themselves are brighter without the double stack in place. If I have a chance I'll compare views with and without. My own feeling is that the PST is one of my best astro purchases. I purchased it when it was effectively 100 dollars less than it is now, so at the price you would be paying with the rebate.

Looking throught my PST (bad conditions, through a thin cloud) the Sun looks like a "dirty orange" with a few bright spots (places where it doesn't look as dirty) and then a darker spot with nice prominences obvious. That was all I could do spur of the moment with the fact that as nice and sunny as it seems here in LA the only place where clouds seem to want to congregate is where the sun is (when I want to view the sun that is.. ) The difference between my double stack and without today was the contrast between the rest of the sun and the surface features..

Fishman, If you can afford it I would say go for it. You will not be disappointed. If your buying a new one it should have the clear front objective & you shouldn't have a problem with the "rust". When I bought my PST I had to go into debt a little but 5 seconds after viewing with it I would have paid double! Hope no one from Meade is reading this. I even passed up on a GREAT annviersary gift my wife was going to give me a few months later so I could get a filter to double stack my PST. And the gift was something REALLY cool that she found for me.

Daniel,
I'm not sure if this will get edited or not so I hope you get to read it.
I'm a gun nut, besides the astronomy thing. It was a day renting machine guns at a range in Conn. We were tight on cash at the time & I would have gone thru 1500-2000 easy so I told her let me get the SM40 it's cheaper & will last longer & we'll goto the range when we have more surplus cash. They have a minigun that goes around 3000 RPM at a per round charge so it would have added up real quick!
Is she a great wife to find this place for me or what.

If you want to see the Sun like it is so displayed in images these days in H-alpha, then yes.....you DO NEED to image the Sun. It is a whole different hobby almost when you just do visual H-alpha observing where everything is much, much more subtle. And there's nothing wrong with that either. But expect *subtle*.
