question about my lx10
      #2042587 - 12/10/07 09:25 PM

i purchased a lx10 from opt about 6 months ago and really love this scope. ive tried using the standard wedge that came with the scope but after setting it up and using it, the vibration was so bad that i just use the scope in altazimuth position and would prefer this over the equat, position because its more comfortable. i was thinking of a way to be able to track in alta/az. im not sure this would be practical but how about a round table platform under the fork unit. i could also use it with my dobs. any other suggestions would be appreciated. thanks, don.

Anti-vibration tripod footpads help tremendously.

Certainly the thin fork arms are one of the problems, when they are tilted over for polar tracking. So putting it on a slanted tracking platform will not get rid of their contribution to the problem.

My LX10 has just recently gone onto a SVP GEM mount. More comfortable viewing angles than the polar fork and it feels more rigid too.

at one time i was thinking about the svp mount with the object locator but the price they wont for this combo is kind of way out in my option. for about the same price you can get a celestron equat, 5 with goto.

I'm guessing you don't have the field tripod?
You can probably find one on am for $150.
It will make your setup much more stable.

Yeah, if you want goto that's probably the better move. I didn't, in fact I only got the single-axis tracking drive for mine, no computer. Still a push-to and manual-control type of guy. I did think about goto, briefly, but reports of how noisy the slewing can be really concerned me, I like peace and quiet out there, and there are houses nearby.

It's taking me some time to get used to the mount and how best to operate it, but I'm getting there finally. I've had my LX10 since 1999 and was fine with the wedge-fork until 17P Holmes this year and it really brought to home how painful it is to use that type of mount for northern objects, which I'd pretty much been avoiding till then. That's when I decided it was time for a change.

Mike

Donnie, you must tighten all 3 wedge to base bolts, and all the bolts on the wedge itself. Plus put 3 bolts for the wedge to tripod. It really makes a difference. The one center knob just doesn't cut it.

skywatchr, if i ever set the wedge back up i will try your suggestion, thanks. firestar, the scope came with its standard tripod. its not what i would call real versatile. it don't have adjustable legs and it spreads out way too wide. no center support. hudson yak, im in your ball park, i don't wont go to, just a single drive system. the celestron 5 is a real hefty mount and a great price but trying the get one without goto is almost impossible now days. don

Oh, it sounds like you don't have the real "standard" Meade Field tripod. I don't like that version either. I used to have one and got rid of it immediately. You need the one with the leg spreader, and adjustable legs. They are Much more stable. I guess Meade went for "low-cost" on that model. But either way, use all the bolts like I said before and it will help a lot.
