Sun Spots 12-14-07 new
      #2051256 - 12/14/07 04:59 PM Attachment (84 downloads)

Taken afocal with an Orion 102mm Mak, 26mm Meade Super Plossl, Kodak EasyShare CX7430, Baader solar film white light full aperture filter, Baader M&S filter, Lumicon #15 Yellow/Orange filter and Barska digiscoping adapter.

I know it isn't nearly as good as some of the other members shots, but I'm on a very limited budget and am just making do with what I've got and can get for cheap. Just thought some others might get an idea of what can be achieved on a tight budget. I'm going to get a web cam shortly and hopefully that will improve my results.

Great photo! If you haven't already, you might wish to compare your photo results with known sunspots on a site like Clearsky. I got all excited about results I obtained afocally with a Sony DSC-W1 shooting through the eyepiece of my Questar 3.5 standard. Later, when I started seeing the same "sunspots" on the moon and also on terrestrial subjects, it finally dawned on me that something else was at work. I think I was somehow getting images of dust motes on internal surfaces of the camera's lens. I rotated the camera around the eyepiece to ensure that the dust followed the camera and wasn't in the telescope's optical train. I figure there's no way that an ordinary mortal can take one of those motorized, telescoping, non-interchangeable point and shoot lenses apart for cleaning and then get it back together again - at least not this ordinary mortal - so I guess I'm stuck with those "sunspots." The blemishes were most evident when I'd zoom the camera lens all the way to the telephoto position in order to eliminate vignetting. They were pretty subtle but still evident at shorter focal lengths. I don't see them at all when I'm using the camera to take scenics and the like, so I doubt that it's dust on the CCD.

Sorry about your skepticism, but I've been watching these spots for the last few days (when it has been clear enough) as they've been traversing the suns disc. This shot is from the SOHO satellite earlier this morning to prove they are actually on the sun not just dust in my lens.

I wasn't doubting the validity of your results, I was just offering a cautionary tale based on my own disappointing experience. I had checked other sources as well before my post.

Very nice pic. I like the fantastic orange-yellow color, and the way it gets darker out near the edge.

Very Nice, Tom!!!
Just goes to show ya what can be done with a little effort and modest gear. The sunspots show up well also!
Thanks for sharing!

No problem. I felt that there should be no doubt about what I had captured in case another beginner looked at it and became discouraged about his or her own possible results.

Thanks, the color is from the #15 Yellow/Orange filter. Without it, the shot would look light gray/blue from the solar film filter. I think that the color makes it look more natural. I've got a #12 Yellow filter on order to compare to the #15. The Baader M&S filter noticably increases the contrast. I bought it initially for viewing Mars but have found it to help with the contrast on the sun too.
