Canon EF 100 f/2 USM for astrophotography? new
      #2063058 - 12/20/07 04:52 AM

Hello,

I wonder if a Canon EF 100 f/2 USM lense will be apriopriate for astroimaging? I would of course stop it down to f/2.8 (this particular speed is one of my criteria). Anybody has any experience in astroimaging with this glass? If it's not the best choice, what would be then?

Appreciate all your pieces of advice

cheers,

Jacob

I use that lens quite a bit for astrophotography. Used it with my Canon 350D, and now with my 40D. Extremely sharp - here is a recent example. This is three 90 second and one 120 second stacked in DSS - lens was stopped down to f/3.5. Camera was mounted on a CG-5 mount:

Here is the uncropped version of the image:

Have you read Samir's website? I believe he recommends this lens because you can autofocus on stars.

George,

Would it be possible for you to show me the full frame from that lens? Have you tried shooting at f/2.8? If yes what were the results? As I mentioned, f/2.8 is what I need the most, because I haven't got many clear nights here.

Andrew, I believe Samir is using Canon EF100 f/2.8 Macro lens, isn't he? That's a different glass, not too mention more expensive

The second picture above is the full frame with the lens. I've probably shot with f/2.8, but I generally stop down a little further - helps somewhat with the focusing. Although the above images were at f/3.5 I was using an IDAS light pollution suppression filter. I have a moderately severe light pollution problem at my location, but find stopping down to f/3.5 doesn't cause any problems even with the lps filter.

Thanks for the answer. I meant the full frame at full resolution, or even better - a photo straight out of the camera. I'm especially interested in the edges of the photo, how the glass behaves there. But thanks anyway! That's the first astropic I've seen taken with that lens

I don't think we can do that on this board, we're limited to the size of pics we can post. If you PM me with your email address I'll send you a full resolution image with that lens.
