Comet Holmes December 26, 2007 new

Can't seem to get away from this guy---the coma definitely has grown still larger, although undeniably dimmer. This is 60 minutes of luminance unbinned (5 min subs, -23C) with the FSQ106N and ST2000xm, from my POD in Redlands, Ca. Seeing not good with 35-40 mph sustained winds out here this evening. For a larger version go to

and click on the pic a couple of times for bigger versions.

Regards,

Jim

Very well done on this huge object, especially considering wind and other conditions.

Looks great Jim, having the galaxies in the shot makes it even more interesting, for that much wind you did awesome!

Jim, beautifful photo, those galaxies give some sense of scale, this sucker is HUGE !!!

12-26-07 6:45-6:55 EST Bishop GA: After daytime temps in the 50s, a quick dew was settling almost immediately. Temps during the observation wer likely low 50s, very high humidity, nonetheless good clear seeing conditions. Comet Holmes was naked-eye, huge and diffuse, last night here in Bishop GA. First clear AND moonless night since we moved in, and a surprise to boot, since cloudiness was predicted. Tried at 38X with 106' TFOV in the 40mm Paragon with the 12" f/4.9, but the diffuseness is so great that I could only make out the central cigar-shaped portion, and not even the nucleus...
