I have an old Toshiba Satellite Pro 420 CDT that was given to me several years ago that I'd like to use with the Phillips web cam that's on the way. It has a P100 processor, 40MB ram, 1.2gb hard drive and Win98 first edition, and no USB port. I'm planning to upgrade the OS to 98SE and get a USB pc card.
How well will this work? Anything else I need to do? I'll use my desktop to process my images and the laptop just to capture the video. I can't really afford to buy another laptop right now. Thanks in advance for any help.

Tom -
Here are the minimum system requirements for the new Philips webcam:
System requirements • Microsoft ®Windows ®98SE/2000/ME or XP; • Pentium ®III,500 Mhz or equivalent; • 128MB RAM and 100 MB free hard disk space;; • One free USB port and CD--ROM or DVD drive.
Looks like you will need more 'box' but you might as well give it a try. Maybe do some research first to see if others have succeeded. Would save you the $$ spent on the USB card.

Thanks Dan,
I never even thought about the cam's requirements. I just assumed that if I had a USB port it would work. I'll probably just sell the old Toshiba and try to find a deal on a newer used one that already meets the minimum for the web cam.

Yes that laptop is very old, you could put a new hard drive but the problem would be actually the ram with very little very few new programs will run on it.
Best is to sell it and buy a better one new onem, i have seen a lot of new laptops below the 400 dls mark on many sites like walmart.com or bestbuy.com even on circuit city you only have to look real good for a good deal.

I agree with Alex, Sell IT and get a new one. There is too little RAM, Hard drive space and no USB on the Toshiba. IMHO it will not perform well.
For the record I use a old Compaq Armada 1700 with a TouCam Pro II, and K3CCDTools. Hard drive space limits the number of AVI files I can capture per session. Also use CCDOPS with it on with a SBIG ST-7 parallel port connetion.
I must copy AVI and still images to another PC for process. That is something else to consider. I use a network card on the Laptop to transfer to my home network of Desktop PCs. If it did not have the network card I would not use it as much.
Stats: PII (yes that is II) 266 MH, 128RAM, 5 GB Harddrive, on board USB 1.1 and TouchPad mouse. Windows 2000 PRO OS; only essential services are loaded. (It was a free system from my former employer)

Thanks all, I'm already looking at 2 available for under $200 that should do nicely.
