Did you know there's an owl on the one dollar bill?

That is truly fascinating. By the way, is it like really really cloudy and rainy, and has been for weeks, and you are going crazy from not being able to get outside? Or perhaps you are incarcerated, hospitalized, or otherwise institutionalized? Or maybe all your binos and scopes are off for repair, and you have only a 10x loupe for optical thrills? Whatever circumstances drove you to this discovery, thanks, and keep them coming! Ron

Not incarcerated, no cloudy skies. It was smoke from brushfires that kept me inside. On older bills the owl was more accurately engraved. Some folks now think it's a spider.
I shot this with a wide angle lens set to macro.

Interesting. The next party trivia stumper or a surefire bar bet winner, just be sure to bring your magnifing glass with you to "prove it". It's good to know the older owl was more accurately engraved because I ain't making the connection from this image.

Kenny,,
Glad to see your response here, as I thought it was just me that wasn't making the connection. I just don't see it either. Maybe I'm looking too hard or too long. After staring at this for an hour and a half,, I gave up! [Just kidding ] I'm sure it's there, I just don't get it and this isn't the first time I missed something that everyone else sees.
Thanks, Mark J.D.

Here's another image of it: http://www.eeggs.com/images/items/997.full.jpg
If you google search there are a zillion websites on it, though a lot of them seem to be a little off-the-wall.

For what it's worth, the video on this website shows the owl, and sorta' explains it. That explanation is toward the video's end, and a bit of patience is necessary. In the video the image actually does resemble an owl.

The "dollar bill test" is a good test of telescope optics. Since it's indoors, there is less seeing effects. Try seeing how much of the owl detail you can discern at 30 feet with high power and then go to ridiculous powers to watch how the image breaks down. You will need to illuminate the bill with a bright light. The owl is one of several "secret" marks on the dollar bill.

I thought it was a fair test for my lens too. At closest focus on macro setting, high aperture (f22 or so) it did rather well.
While web-searching for images of owls on older bills (where I remember it looked more like an owl) I noticed a lot of sites describing our money as "designed by Satan". Now how am I to sleep at night?

Well, since you're shooting money, here is a shot of Jefferson's eye off a new $5 showing that some of the finer details aren't much larger than the paper fibers: http://members.cox.net/yuzuha1/jeffeye.jpg
