Very Slick Rob,

What did you finish off the wood with,
I used poly urathane
(SP?) on mine.

Have fun with it,

Alan

I wasn't sure what to use. Found a can of fast drying satin varnish on the "clearance table" at the hardware store. One thin coat.

Nicely done, Rob.

Now I understand why you chose the fold-down cover for your observatory eyepiece rack. I'd been thinking you were going to attach the rack to the pier.

Thanks Old Dude

My obs is small so the rack will be in arms reach most of the time.

Just thought I should mention- don't use pine boards for this!

Went into the obs tonight to get set up and the lid on the rack was open? What happened was, even though the wood had been outside for two years, the lid "cupped" over 1/4" and the magnets could no longer keep it closed.

I can't recommend what wood to use but I'm going to remake the lid out of something other than pine.

Live and learn
Rob

I used a thin coat of varnish.

What should I have used and would it prevent the cupping?

(I'm not a wood guy, I'm used to welding things together)

a couple of coats would have been better with plenty of time to between coats.

I bet your right Chris but I was too impatient to watch paint dry.

I'll try again and finish it more thoroughly. Do you think with enough varnish- the pine won't warp?

I am a serious wood worker and sawdust maker..

It WAS NOT the use of pine that caused your problems .. Just from looking at the picture it looks like you used 1x10 pine..

You could have ripped it into 3" boards and glued up a solid piece and alternated the grain
and avoided the bowing IF YOU sealed the end grain

Lumber core Plywood .. heck almost any kind of plywood
would not have bowed either...

It sure looks good however...

It may be time (especially in Seattle) to think about installing a dehumidifier observatory...LOL

Thanks Bob

The lid is 1x10, I should have mentioned that. I'm a dunce when it comes to wood, what do you mean "alternate" the grain?

I'd like to stick with pine since I have a piece left over and it would match.

Dehumidifier? Hmmm...maybe that would take care of the occasional moisture on the inside of the corector plate

You take your 1x10 and cut it length wise three times, then flip the middle piece upside down and then glue them all together on edge. You need a couple of clamps long enough to clamp the separate pieces together and use a good water resistant glue.
