XLT/UHTC worth it? new
      #212106 - 10/03/04 09:18 PM

Hello,

I don't know if this topic has been discussed here but are the enhanced coatings by Celestron/Meade worth the extra cost or are these just hype.

Regards,

Chris

They aren't mere hype, but each individual must decide whether they are worth the cost. A historical perspective may help.

For more than ten years, Meade SCT's were equipped with EMC (Enhanced Multi-Coatings) and Celestron SCT's with StarBright coatings, which were also enhanced and multicoated. They were comparable, though most agreed that StarBright had a slight edge. Both were certainly usable; many fine telescopes were produced with each coating system which still give good performance. None of the American SCT's since about 1990 used the old MgFL coatings; they were clearly uncompetitive. They are still seen on low-cost Chinese Maks.

When Meade introduced their UHTC (Ultra-High Transmission Coatings) they dropped the EMC coatings, The choice today is between UHTC and standard (single) MgFL coatings. I'd flip a coin between EMC and UHTC but that's not the choice. MgFL coatings aren't competitive; UHTC is pretty much necessary.

Celestron introduced their XLT coatings in response to UHTC. They are somewhat better than standard StarBright but StarBright coatings are very good so the user does have a real choice.

A-ha, so you are in the market then Chris

You will most definitely put the hubble out of business if you start imaging with a larger scope that's for sure

From my small "boo-boo" I made so far, I think the special coatings make it more difficult to clean the corrector, in my opinion.

Thanks for your info... I am thinking of getting either a C11 or a C14 maybe even a second hand one. Yes, I am getting an aperture itch...

Regards,

Chris

Those are both great optical tubes. If they are new enough to have Starbright coatings they will perform reasonably close to the latest models.
