Um, please excuse my newbie-ness, but what's a star party? Is it when people throw a party so friends can stargaze together?

Gathering of astronomers... amateur & not; formal or nonformal; week long, weekend, one day; sometimes combining camping; almost always at some dark sky site. Can be just a few friends on up into hundreds, many who don't know each other (yet). Great chance to look thru lots of different types and sizes of scopes. Unfortunately, I haven't made it to one yet... but, I'm on the look-out for an opportunity.

I'm about to take on my first, the All Arizona Star Party. Among other good things, I'll have a chance to meet several Cloudy Nights regulars for the first time, in person. Next saturday. Can't wait to have the 3-legged newt out under a dark sky for the first time.

Weather permitting we are having an impromptu Cloudy Nites star party next weekend (spilling over into Monday nite) in North Central Pennsylvania, which isn't too far from Niagra Falls/Buffalo as the crow flies. How far are you away from there? If it's do-able for you, please check out our NE star party thread in this forum and join us...hope you have camping gear...
