Yeah, I know where you are coming from! Believe it or not, when the photo was taken at circa 11AM. this morning, it was showing 1016 hPa. Now at 5:30PM. it is falling to 1014 hPa which jibes with the Internet Weather Underground forecast for my particular area.

You guys are making me jealous. I am now on the hunt for a reasonably-priced modern weather station.
On a related note - 3 inches of rain fell in my backyard in Houma today! Ouch! The veggie garden loved it though.

Hey Mike, it likewise rained a steady drip most of the day yesterday here in Kenner. It started just as I finished fabing the mast and shelf for my WS sensors. Sort of like the "new telescope phenomenon"! I am looking forward to taking weather observations when Fall comes round. Where I am located just 3 blocks from Lake Pontchartrain, the anemometer will get a real workout.
Go on E-Bay and look under "weather stations". There are a bunch of used ones you can bid on. If you want a new one, they also have a number of different brands up for auction.

Mike, if you have a Discovery store anywhere close to you they are closing all their stores and going to online sales only. I was in my local DS a few days ago and they had several WS on sale for 1/2 price...$75-$100 instead of $150-$200. I didn't get one because my weather is pretty predictable around here...always warm and sunny!
Actually, I'm still thinking about it...

I browsed Amazon, Google and eBay to take a look at the options available in different price points.
I want the following in addition to the usual temperature and humidity - wind speed and direction, dew point, barometric pressure, and a rain gauge. So that rules out the little cheapie ones. The type I am shooting for is likely in the $150-$200 price range, which makes it a birthday or Xmas present only - or I would have to sell off astro gear to offset the price, which won't happen.
So it'll have to wait until....
weather station for birthday. SQM for Christmas.
Regards and clear skies,
MikeG

I'd like a rain gauge also...What units are you looking at?
I have a SQM and they are fun little gadgets. My readings last week were pretty good where we were vacationing

Well, my used (E-Bay) "Bios Weather" weather station came in today. It appears as new and included all the factory hardware. This is the unit that Radio Shack was selling a couple of years ago made by the Thermor Co..
I already had the mast and sunshade erected so it was a snap to just install the weather sensors. I had it up and running in less than an hour. It appears to be fairly accurate and is easy to read. See the photos to follow.

#2. Rain gauge on top of sunshade housing the temp. sensor and transmitter. It's all mounted on my fence at the side of my house.

#3. The indoor LCD monitor which has an AC/DC adaptor, battery backup and backlit display. The station barometer matches the reading on my Milford analog baro and local Weather Underground website readings so I presume the electronics are accurate.

Remy, what size PVC did you use? I used 3/4" for mine, and I think it has a bit too much "flex"... Hubert

Hubert, I did have a little flex problem with the topmost mast. It's 1" dia. The U bolt assembly is designed for 1" pipe, no larger. That's why I fashioned a wind brace. I also have guy wires on the larger PVC attached to the fence. I think it will do the job up to 80MPH or so.
Thanks for noticing the wrong date Bob. I will change it ASAP.

If you use "Schedule 80" PVC, it's pretty rigid. Sched 40 is more common and what you generally find at home improvement stores. You CAN get Sched 80, but you probably have to ask for it.

You've seen my first attempt at installing a home weather station. Well, this morning I lucked out at the Goodwill store and found another one still in the box with all the parts intact. It's exactly the same as my first one a Bios brand. I got it for $7.49 inc. tax! My first one cost 8X that.
I installed it in the back yard so I can see it from my bedroom window. I used an aluminum and PVC mast and made a mount out of cedar similar to the first station which is on the right side of the house about 100ft. from the newer one. They don't conflict cause they transmitt on different coded freq's. The first stations receiver is pretty much permanently mounted on the wall in my study. This new one I will leave mobile and take it with me to any room in the house.
Here's a couple of pics of station #2!

Finished installation. The transmitter (where the thermometer and barometer live) is shielded from the Sun by the little cedar shelf which supports the rain gauge.

The receiver. What's funny is that the fake plastic overlay shows the wind at 10kph out of the SW. When I hooked it up, guess how fast the wind was blowing and from what direction? That's right!
