Hi Steve,

This is almost exactly the procedure that the iOptron rep described at OPT last July. The only difference is that he said he always uses Polaris as the target (when visible).

The other things he emphasized were to use the installed bubble level, and to level the mount when pointing in 4 different directions. Just leveling it while pointing a single direction, even when using the bubble level, he said was not sufficient.

Here are a few pictures that I took last night using a 102mm f/7 refractor, a SAC-7b camera and a MINI TOWER!

Sorry for the quality but these are the first images that I have ever taken with this kind of camera.

Hi Guys

I recived my MiniTower few days ago ( bought in Adorama).
Yesterday I was trying to check its performance outside looking to full moon between clouds.

I'm a bit disapointed with results which I got. Here they are along with my questions to you:

1. No GPS connection and location readings at all (Display is saying GPS ON - but never GPS OK). After updating firmware for new one ( downloaded from IOptron webiste) GPS finally showed OK and coordinates were updated. I hop that was source of the problem.

2. I still didn't resolved problem with setting up the mount and telescope. I know - it sounds like problem of astro infant amateur but its true.
As I underestod after reading manual: after balancing mount should be set to park position and than pointed SOUTH ,together with telescope. There is small arrow with the letter S on the base of mount cube which are showing proper direction.

I did whole set up this way but each time when I'm trying to do any star alignment telescope is slewed and pointed looking in to ground! I checked the controller setup and it looks ok to me: (I'm from MA so: Hemisphere-North, UTC-5 set behind UTC, Dayligh savings=YES, date and time are corect either)

Please advise

1. Point arrow (S) south.
2. Level mount according to level bubble on mount.
3. Loosen clutch (dec) and point scope straight up, lock clutch.
4. Make sure both clutches are tightened.
5. Turn mount on.

If everything else is correct you should be ready to a star alignment.

Enjoy

1. The GPS OK might not be related to your firmware updating. You may get the OK sign after a long while in some places if the satellite signal is weak. (Did you do it in door?) Try different locations and you may conclude whether a GPS problem. I went through the same and turned out my back yard was a dead spot.

2. Make sure your mount was at AA mode. My first time operation of the minitower was also as frustrated as yours, the scope pointed to the ground in daytime when slew to the sun. When I double checked the controller setting, I found it was at equ mode. After corrected it, everything ok. And so far so good!

Hope it helps.

CS,

Jason

Thank you for all the advises!

The problem with seeting up the mount and telescope seems to be resolved.
Thank you Gary for step by step description!
In my case telescope was paintied groud due to fact that I set it in this same direction as mount (South),
instead of setting it straight up (to the zenith).

GPS problem will be rechecked tonight or tomorrownight.
In out-door pleacewhere I check mount yesterday night I'm getting GPS coordinates on my HP palmtop
after apprx 3 minutes of waiting. In case of my mount it was more than 1.5 hour just after firmware upgrade.
It could be coincidence so this is a reason why I would like to check everything again.

Again - thank you guys !

Hi all!

I JUST got back from PATS!! I've not slept since 0600 Sunday so I'm rather bushed! LOL I will say that the PATS show was a fantastic experience and I had way too much fun!

The GPS may very well have shaken lose during trnasit. Remove the four cover screws and use a small pair of needle nosed pliers to tighten the gold connector on the antenna lead. Just screw it down a little bit and that will most likely solve the problem of the slow hook up to the birds.

I agree that the issue of pointing sounds like the controller is in the EQ mode. That has happened to me on more than one occassion when I'm in a rush to beat the clouds.

By all means USE THE BUILT IN BUBBLE LEVEL! The mount is calibrated to THAT LEVEL when it is set up in the factory. I learned the hard way that a torpedo level is NOT to be used because it will throw everything off. I know, it doesn'e make sense until you think of the unit on a bench in the factory. THEN it all becomes clear.

Let me know if I can help anyone in any way.

I'm off to bed!

CS to all,

Steve Forbes

Just for the fun of it I went out last night and tried some more imaging with a C8 and the Mini Tower. Here are some of the results. Just remember, I have NO IDEA just what I am doing with this camera!!

Somewhere along the line someone had wanted to know just where the GPS connections were. Here is a picture showing the one that occassionally shakes loose in transit. If your GPS does not show "OK" after several minutes, then try using some needle nose pliers to tighten the gold connector. Just give it a little tweak as if you were tightening the connector on a cable TV.

While you have the top off could you possibly give me the details on the GPS receiver? I just ordered a SmartStar-E mount and want to add my own GPS receiver. Maybe just hook up my handheld to it since it does output NEMA data.

Steve,

Do you have any details as to the length of exposure or if more than one was taken and then stacked, etc. ? Also were you at prime focus or did you use any barlows or Powermates to increase the magnification ?

Thanks,

Sam

Steve,

I have a question about the backlash settings. Do they in any way affect how the mini tower tracks or does it just come into play when you are using the controller to zero in on your target at different speeds ? Currently mine is using whatever default settings it came with.

Thanks,

Sam

Guys,
We had our mini out twice so far, and all is great except for the altitude clutch, which does not seem to have enough holding power. My wife is using the mount and she had tightened the knob as firmly as she could, and had the scope carefully balanced. In spite of this, when she replaced an EP with a heavier one, the scope slid down with the weight. I went to help her, and noted that you could easily move the scope up and down against the clutch pressure. I told her she had to tighten it more, and showed her how to do it. Then it still slid up and down, but it took somewhat more pressure. I then turned that disk with all my might and it firmed up to the point that it held steady with any reasonable pressure. She could NEVER tighten it that much. I am concerned that she cannot tighten it enough to keep it from losing its alignment. Had anyone noticed a problem in this area? Is our unit possibly defective?

Frank

I have noticed the same problem when going from a 1.25" eyepiece to a 2" eyepiece. It is almost impossible to tighten the ALT knob sufficiently. It is a design flaw as far as I am concerned.
