After three tries I finally got an M45 I'm pretty happy with. It's 21 exposures of 5 minutes each, at ISO 800.

(A higher resolution version is available at http://dandkmccrady.home.comcast.net/images/M45-2005-01-04.jpg.)
Comments always welcome, and thanks!

Nice shot!! I have been trying to get some of the clouds around the Pleiades as well. I'd like to see what one of your 5 minute shots look like pre-processing...do you mind posting one?

Beautiful shot Don! Very nice nebulosity and color.
I noticed something curious in the fullsize shot: While the nebulosity seems smooth, the stars look pixelated to me. Am I the only one who sees this? Could this just be jpeg compression artifacts?
Regards,
Gary

I just looked at it Gary and noticed the same thing. Squarish pixelated stars. I hadn't noticed it when I was looking at the nebulosity.

I have read that squarish stars can result from resizing the image. The type of resizing can diminish the squarish effect.--Steve

Indeed they do look squarish. Thanks for the valuable feedback!
I'm not sure what happened there, I'll have to see if the smoothing caused it, or some other step. Could be JPG compression too. I didn't resize it... that's full-resolution.

square stars show up more often in systems that are under sampling such as one shot color cameras with short focal length scopes. the bayer matrix interpolation can aggravate this symptom.
not saying this IS what caused it... just one possibility.
another possiblity is the high number of images stacked during alignment will pixel shift misalignments and depending on the software used this can favor horizontal or vertical orientations.

The blockiness shows up in the original frames, so I guess it's due to Bayer interpolation.
