Yep - I feel the same way.

What I do, however is something else entirely.

I can understand our frustration but why lower yourself to their level. I would just have told them to scram and pester someone else without yelling. Although you felt like it.

I'd probably come out with something like that. The public mostly leave me alone as I remain motionless and glued to the eyepiece for hours

The worst part is that it was a great night. I actually sent an e-mail to the president of the club. I will speak to him about public ediquite.

I've had impatient viewers, but nothing like that. I always have a step stool for the shorter observers to avoid problems with ep position.

What would I do? Not sure, but I'd probably just explain in a very stern tone that I'll be ready in a few minutes. If that isn't good enough, there are other scopes from which to view.

I gave up going to "star parties" and club public viewing nights a lot of years ago .... I've had people show up wanting look through my telescope who were obviously totally out of it (very drunk) , who are likely to stumble or trip over your tripod legs and I always felt very uncomfortable if surrounded by several people who you can't watch properly .... I've my favourate eyepiece and my barlow lens stolen at one such event , plus there's the cretins who insist in roaming about with bright torches or who park their cars with their high beams on you.

Personally, I don't think attending with your telescope at a star party is worth the bother.

There's no excuse for rude or obnoxious behaviour from anyone, obviously. And considering the amount of patience required in a hobby such as this, if someone can't wait 20 minutes to get a view at the eyepiece, then chances are, they'll never be interested in the hobby.

Having said that, the way I see it, public star parties are in effect, a public outreach event i.e. you almost have to have a quasi customer-service mindset in an event like this. Regardless of what your skill level is, or affiliation with the club/organizers, if you bring a scope, and someone sees you with a scope, they pretty much assume you're an expert.

You obviously don't want to tolerate rude people and have people walk all over your, but there's also some level of diplomacy involved with any public event.

Heh, while I'm not recommending it, it sure would have been funny if you ripped the flashlight out of the kids hand and threw it as far as you could that may have made your point.

All kidding aside I am seriously considering a local star party in the near future but only as someone who wants to look through various telescopes and eyepieces.
Hats off to those who set up thier scopes at these events, I couldnt do it.

Tom,

I was SOO tempted. The first would have been to tell the father to go ( Edited ) as it was my scope and that I would not let him look through it and then grabbing the flashlight and throwing it over the side of the mountain. But cooler heads prevailed, my wife actually save dthe day becuase when ever I looked at a new object she and the kids were the first so if you didn't have patience you would walk away which is what he did. The people that stayed really wanted to stay and at the end of the night one of the guys thanked me for showing him the Nebula's. I will still follow up with the president and I am pretty certain he will let the people know about the scopes.

Ted,

What do I need bouncers for, I am from NJ where only the strong survive. I have been in Newark after dark and in Camdem during the day. I can handle a jerk. I was just venting

Wow! I have been doing public programs non stop for the last five years, nearly 300 events a year and I have never had anyone talk to me like that. Sorry to hear about it. As for the kid I know how they are with the flash lights, most of the time I just say lights off please and that takes care of it but in the eyes? Come on. I have had a few odd balls look through my scope but about 99% of the people who come out are very greatful that we bring our scopes out! Even in the 100+ degree heat at night here in AZ.

The flash photos I am use to, if its open to the public in anyway there are going to be a few who just dont get it! Though its kind of cool that they public like the scopes so much that they want a picture! But yes the flash is brutal, I have other public that hate them, they are trying to enjoy the scopes and several flashes go off.

Finger prints on the eyepieces, yeah this happenes every once in a while and nothing you can really do about it except tell them no and clean them later. It doesnt hurt the glass anyway.

The grabing of the scope! Oh boy can I relate! I had my 16" dob out at a public program for a community. I always use my 16" for out reach. The kids at this events were HORID! They were hanging on my mirror box like it was some sort of play ground piece. I had someone looking through the scope and all the sudden it starts to move towards zenith, to my amazment there was a little 4 or 5 years old hanging on the back of the rocker box! That was scary beyond belief! That was abosolutly the WORST night of out reach I have ever had. But that was one night if a five year period.

Yes, the public events can be fun and you are bound to get some odd balls, morons, etc... out to the events but you do what you can they move on to the next on in line and just enjoy your night.

I'd put fresh black paint around the eyecup of a cheapie eyepiece and tell him to have a look.

Offer to refund his money. He continues, or his kid's still cutting up, do so and kindly point to the gate. Still obnoxious, grab both by the ear -HARD- and toss them out. But be polite. Life's too short, but unfortunately, we have at least 2&3 generations of this sect of society to put up with. No sense in talking like 'em.

YES

Anybody that is too stupid to be appreciative of the fact that you are volunteering your time and equipment for FREE, needs to be told to go ( Edited )...

You guys are amazing people that go out and do this kinda stuff for the public. I can't imagine ever having a "line" of people waiting to look through my telescope. I can't imagine I would ever "want" a line of people anywhere around me or my telescope..

I guess I am just a selfish *BLEEP*, I am in this hobby for ME, and any of my family or friends that might be interested. Everybody else, get your own damn telescope...

Outreach or not, public or not I would never accept someone talking to me like that. Act like a AH get treated like an AH.
