I finally got round to spending some time unpacking and inspecting this 'scope...

Wow! It's such a beautiful thing! Classic clean looks, sturdy yet lightweight...

I promise to take some pictures of it and get them on here tomorrow. I've some questions to ask about one or two of the accessories too.

Well, here are the pics as promised! Sorry about the poor lighting- it's raining outside today and the gloom is penetrating the house too!

I actually got a chance to try it last night. Looked at the Moon and got very nice sharp views. Saturn was ok, though seeing wasn't good enough for detail. That was all I had the chance for. Raised a couple of questions, but I'll put them after the pictures...

The Lens- perfectly clean and shiny. Excellent coatings!

Question 1:
These are the accessories that came with the package. The eyepieces are a 25 Kelner, 12.5 Kelner and 6 Ortho. All fine. There's a photo-adapter, an adapter that converts from 30.3 to 36.4mm (why?), and a strange little circular prism-type thing that screws into the adapter, but I don't know what it is for. When this item is inserted the exit pupil is no longer circular, and there are many reflections inside it. Any ideas?

Question 2:
The legs have suffered some wear and tear. This is the 'worst' of it. What is the best way to improve this? The mount and legs work peerfectly, though there are no rubber feet on the leg tips (is this normal?)

Finally, I did notice some image slop when racking the image in and out. It was not large, but it was there. I investigated the focuser today, and found the two tension screws underneath were very tight, so slackened them slightly, which made no difference but did increase smoothness. However, there are two very tiny screws above the focuser, which I presume align the drawtube, a-la the same way as in Skywatcher scopes today? These two tiny ones were tightened so much I could not loosen them at all, so have left it be for now.

I have ordered the 0.96 to 1.25mm diagonal too, so I can use my Plossls etc!

I have absolutely no need for this scope at all. Except that it screams out "Classic Scope!" when I look at it!

Hi Spyke -

Looks to be in great shape!
I have no idea what the strange adapters are for, mine didn't come with those - maybe some kind of camera adapters that someone added? The upper screws on the focuser help to adjust it - I haven't touched mine yet - it seems pretty good.

As for the legs, you could try refinishing them. Remove all the hardware from the wood, and then *lightly* sand the wood by hand with fine sandpaper. Add two coats of polyurethane (steel wool between coats) and they should look like new again.

As for having no need for such a scope - if you like it, that's a good enough reason. I actually used mine last night and was able to observe Mars at 150x. Color is so minimal that it is like having a 60mm apo.

Thanks Jake,

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with it. Thanks for suggestion for leg cleaning. Will maybe try that. Which focus knobs did you get? They look good.

I actually got the original sales receipt for this scope and the accessories, from way back in 1988! And the manual (mostly in Japanese)! Back then it cost just under 300 with accessories, which was a lot of cash back then.

Just had a couple more quick looks. Mars with 6mm Ortho (115x) showed dark land masses, and only the very tiniest amount of false colour. The moon was again virtually perfect, and I could make out the Alpine Valley at 56x.

There is some smudge or something on the diagonal, so I am now really looking forward to the 0.96 to 1.25 one coming. Whod've thought I'd get excited about a 60mm scope?

Hi Spyke -

At the same time, it is easy to see why they were so pricey. Mine is top notch, and easily as nice as any Unitron I have ever seen.

When I bought mine, it arrived with one of the focus knobs cracked. The ones I added are Astro-Engineering. They fit perfectly, and make focusing a bit nicer.

I have refinished the legs on seveal of these old tripods. They turn out like brand new if you are careful and do a good job. I am attaching a photo of an old Lafayette which I recently restored. This one is a 1958 model, and the legs now look like brand new.

That's very nice!

I'll probably leave the leg renovation until after Christmas, but will keep looking out for step by step instructions that even an all-thumbs person like me can follow without ruining the wood!

Cheers!

Great picture, by the way

i iknow these are old pentax j60 posts, but i just bought one on astromart to go on my polaris mount. can't wait to get it!
initially, i was just looking to replace my monolux 60 x 700 mm lens, cracked in a garage accident. i don't think i could bear to take out the lens and put it in my old scope, so i'll have to keep looking for another objective while i put the pentax thru its paces.

Hi Spyke:

Congrats on a great scope. I bought a J80 a few moons ago and it came with the same 3 eyepieces and the adapter / image inverting prism assembly. It takes the place of the bulky image erectors typically seen with refractors. Enjoy!
