How many seconds was the exposure? Shorter exposure times are best with the planets (brighter objects).

Try 1/5, 1/10 1/25 or even 1/50 (<- brighter - darker ->) second exposure and see how that works with your setup.

Ok, if the above was 1/30, try 1/50 or 1/100 (or something in between if your camera allows it).

Also, don't forget to adjust the ISO value as well.

ISO hrmmm What would be the equivalent on a Nikon 950? White balance? Contrast adjust?
Well I tried various shutter speeds, 1/60 was better, but I lost detail quickly. Then my fingers went numb. I think I'm gonna do only solar observing when the temp falls below freezing from now on
On a side note Orion Nebula looked really nice in this 6.4mm compared to the 26mm that came with it.

Does the 950 have the facility to take a series of shots with one press of the shutter as the 995 does?
I've used that quite a lot for planets once I have got the exposure right. It gives me a series of images I can then stack. I've left white balance and the other variables alone, so the only variables I alter are the shutter speed (I let the camera alter the f stops automatically) Basically I try for the highest shutter speed/lowest f/stop that will give me a barely visible image, because stacking a few of these will soon bring up a brighter image.
I'd also suggest you zoom out a little to avoid the pixillation that I can see.
Have a practise in daylight on a terrestrial object, so you know how to vary the settings on the camera. Good luck!!

Well there are: continuous single vga sequence 16 shots
Only the 16 shots setting seems to allow for press and release and it takes multiple shots by itself. But it also greatly reduces the resolution. It takes 16 shots on one full LCD window of the camera. Is that the mode you are referring to? I would have to manually slice and dice all the pics before stacking.

It's the VGA sequence I used. That will take 640x480 pics as long as the shutter is pressed (hence the use of a remote cord really helps here) but the 995 also will take higher res photos continuously until the buffer memory is full.

Ah, I don't have the remote shutter control and the image was shaky enough even with out it. I decided I wasn't going to throw any more money at this camera though, gonna save for a rebel.
