Hi everyone,
I just purchased an Orion SteadyPix for my scopes. I don't have a webcam (even if I did a suitable laptop has been hard to find) but I was wondering if it would be possible to shoot Saturn and Jupiter via my camera's (Canon A95) built in video mode that shoots at 320x240 @ 3 minutes for 15 frames/second or at 640x480 @ 30 seconds (10 frames/second)? Would it look decent? What should I expect?
Thanks in advance,
Cameran

I have the A 85 and not only does it do planets but it can get some detail on some DSO's too. I am as novice as they come and only have one night with the camera under my belt and my mount was 2 thick elastic bands and i managed to get this, so get out there and have some fun!!!

Absolutely! Many have stated that better results can be obtained with the avi than the imaging mode, but I have found that I got better results stacking multiple bmp's than the avi. I use the Canon Remote Capture software to achieve focus, and remotely capture images to my laptop. I could tell it the settings, and how many images to take.

Cameran,
I have used a Nikon 995 in movie mode to do this and it does work very well for planets. Sadly for me the resolution was too low (320x240 I think) to make it usable, but if you can shoot 30 seconds at 640x480 at 10 fps that's 300 stackable images to start with at the same resolution as a Toucam Pro. Do you also have the option if your memory card is big enough to shoot a few captures? Then you could end up with quite enough footage to get some good results from Registax.
I'd say go for it, and impress us all.
(PS - Chris, the special package is ready and will go in the post tomorrow (Thurs) morning!!)

Great! I can't wait to give it a shot. Hopefully my SteadyPix that I got off of Astromart will arrive soon. I'll post my results.
I'm not sure about the memory card having room. I believe I have a 256MB card (I don't recall at the moment), how much video will that hold?
Thanks, Cameran

A quick way to find out how much footage it holds is to just shoot off a few 30 sec hi res clips of nothing in particular and see how much the memory card takes; you can even leave the lens cap on!
NB - just a small SteadyPix tip; watch out for the eyepiece holder scratching your eyepiece barrels. A small amount of insulating tape on the edges can stop this as well as a small piece over the head of the bolt where it passes thought the eyepiece clip.
