First solar image!
      #366054 - 03/06/05 08:58 PM Attachment (98 downloads)

Hi everyone, this is my first solar image (and first astro-image period!). It was 882 frames processed in RegiStax 3. I shot it on a Canon Powershot A95 in AVI mode using an Orion SteadyPix camera mount. I used an Orion StarMax 90 and a Sirius Plossl 25mm. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Cameran

Nice.. What solar filter did you use?

Thanks! I used an Orion solar filter for the StarMax 90.

It looks very spherical. I was looking for the Outspan sticker on it.

Incidentally that's the second excellent image from the A95 in AVI mode I've seen this morning, the other one being Chris the Househusband's Saturn. Perhaps we have a winner for the budget astrodigicam title?

Very nice, could it be a little out focus, because i can see some AR at the top right, but no detail. I am thinking maybe a little focus would of giving this detail?

Thanks for the compliments. I agree it appears to be a bit out of focus and I also should have used a better eyepiece. I used my worst eyepiece (a slightly scuffed 25mm Sirius Plossl) since it was my first time imaging and I didn't want anything to happen to my nicer pieces.

By the way, what's AR?

I have attached a newer version of the image, sharpened up a bit using Microsoft Digital Image Suite 10. Hopefully this weekend I can get out to do some more solar imaging.

Thanks for the comments!

Cameran

I wonder if the scuff is responsible for the darker area in the bottom center?

That's what I was thinking. The eyepiece performs fine visually (never noticed the dark spot when I was viewing) but the darkness really showed up in the several AVIs and stills that I shot. I haven't noticed anything like that on any other photos I've taken, so I think I can rule out smudges on the camera lens. Next time I'm going to use my better eyepiece and see what happens.

Good work! It's nice to have the sun back.

I think you are a bit out of focus... I think that I see a sunspot at the upper left, but it's kinda dim.

Looking forward to more.

Thanks Rushwind! It was a sunspot and it looked great in the eyepiece but for some reason it didn't come out in the camera. I had my camera set to focus on infinity. Would a lower or higher aperture or shutter speed help considerably?

You’re off and running, Cameran! Solar imaging is very addictive, isn’t it? Keep trying different shutter speeds, eyepieces, ect...

Keep us posted!

That is a very nice image. Can't wait to see with the sunspots.
