Well, This is my first EVER attempt using the DSI and i started out w/ my first image as m51. The Telescope is a 12"LX200GPS @ f/6.3. In AltAz mode, still awaiting milburn wedge to be delivered. This is about 20, 30 second exposures. No processing. No Dark Frames. I have all the separate exposures saved as fits. Please if you have anypointers please help. Thanks. I actually thought I wouldnt get this far my first night so i am happy with what i did for now. I know it is bad but it is further than what my expectati(If i ever get more clear skies). P.S. the IR filter was removed. Didnt know whether i should use it or not.

Dude!!!!trust me thats awsome! And at f6.3 on m51,try to get a 3.3 reducer it will be easier to get aligned in frame and give more black sky around it to give contrast.Plus it seems easyier to focus at slower f/ratios to me.
Im a total newbie at imaging although Ive been doing the astronomy thing for a long time and it can be a very tuff ordeal just getting the dsi to work in the 1st place.
great job so far, keep it up and most every outting you'll get better.
And the learning process is fun!

For a galaxy wouldn't you maybe want the IR filter in there?

Well done first light. The little "seagull" shaped asterisms worry me a bit; that looks like a pretty severe tracking error. I'm not sure if you nailed focus or not. Can you try stacking the images so that the "seagulls" all line up?
I think that I can see some spiral arm on the left-hand galaxy...
Very cool.

Worth taking darks next time - I'm guessing those seagulls come from hot pixels in the CCD, the software is aligning the images of M51 so the pixel appears to wander. Darks will remove them.
Still, a better 'first go' than mine!

Pretty cool. You caught the arms pretty well. The seagulls are probably tracking error. If you're using track & combine be sure to select a tracking target. In alt/az mode you should be able to stack a couple of minutes worth of images before field rotation becomes a problem. For starters I'd leave the IR filter in, if nothing else it'll help keep the CCD array clean.
Great start, have fun exploring what your new camera can do.

Thanks everyone I am going to try tonight again.
Bill: I am in the process of getting money for a 3.3 FR.
Jimbo & John: Yeah the pixels are from tracking errors. I didn't spend alot of time getting it tracking well. It was a school night. Also the altaz won't be a problem when the milburn wedge I ordered is delivered.
I am going to try and leave in the IR filter tonight and use Dark Frames and spend a littlebit more time getting the tracking more accurate. Also...can you use the LPI as a decent guider? Thanks for all your input. I am just going to keep practicing b/c i have ALOT to learn.
Here is the same pic after adjusting some things in photoshop.
