"This forum is mainly intended for beginners getting started imaging DSO's with webcams, the Meade DSI or other low cost / low resolution imagers. "
As with any forum, the occasional slide off-topic is inherent, and also part of the fun. But IMHO this forum is slowly slipping away from its brief as above.
Planetary imaging, digicams, even film photography seem to feature, not as occasional asides, but as full fledged threads.
This has two effects in my mind; firstly it makes it more work for me to read the forum in search of information/views concerning its proper brief as I have to pick through threads which are better posted elsewhere.
And secondly, there are dedicated fora for planetary imagers, digicam imagers, and film imagers. Wouldn't you expect to get a better informed answer in the proper forum, and also wouldn't that then benefit the users of that forum who are imaging using the same medium?
Please put your posts in the right place everyone
I have now finished moaning, and hope I haven't upset any of you.

er... what topics are fair game for this forum? I figured any "beginner" questions are welcome, no matter what media format the person happened to be using. If I have misunderstood the intent of this forum, I apologize.
I think that it's too bad that we seem to find continuing reasons to kick each other out of particular imaging forums. Can't we all just get along?

The problem is how do you define a beginner question?
I class myself as a beginner but like to post in various forums to get the views from a range of folk.
The forum is a starting area for people to get into astrophotography and yes for film questions they should e moved to the appropriate section but can low cost low resolution get classed as digital cameras too? i dont know.

Simon,
I have been letting the occasional "first-timer" planetary pic through here, under the assumption that those who post them are a bit intimidated to post them in the Solar System Imaging forum.
Likewise, low-cost digicams (not DSLRs) are ok here too, in my opinion. Most people who use them already have a camera on hand and want to give it a go for astrophotography and will have beginner level questions.
There was a film thread that I moved because I think it'll be seen by more film enthusiasts, and thus be better served in the film forum.
Thanks for your comments and rest assured that there are no plans to let the focus drift from beginning imaging, but this is still a fairly new forum and the details are still evolving.

Let's see....'Beginning': inexperienced, neophyte, novice, ....Uh-huh 'Imaging': creating images - on film, digitally, by sketching, or oil paintings....Got that. 'Beginning Imaging'. I think I grasp the concept -- appears to be a forum for beginners in the astro-imaging field, non-format specific. If it is for some specific media, at the exclusion of all others, either it's mis-named or I'm a whole lot dumber than I thought!

Whoops, I never even read the bit about DSI/webcam, so i've asked DSLR questions here. I am a complete beginner to imaging, and my rule of thumb is that if I know it's a newbie question I ask here. If I don't, then it's still probably a newbie question, but I ask it in the appropriate forum. And they're all really friendly, I've posted all sorts of half-baked images when I was too dumb/inexperienced to realize that they were rubbish and i've never received anything other than kind remarks and advice on how to improve.

Greg,
the forum can only be what people want it to be, and IMHO is the most useful one on CN at the moment. You have the hard job, not me, and I suppose I have fallen to the temptation of trying to "help" by stating my preferences.
No one need apologise for anything. I wouldn't want to kick anyone anywhere, but sought to suggest that we try to keep to the forum guidelines, which ultimately were specified for good reasons, and also seem plain enough to me.
I posted my thoughts to see if anyone else felt the same - it seems not, so please excuse my outburst, and let's carry on improving ourselves.

I'd like to see a split between getting the image (film, DSLR, CCD and webcam) and processing it. IMHO a single image processing forum would be better than having processing tips split between three places - the techniques share a lot of common ground.

I've asked several questions here, and I'm as much a beginner as you can get. I shoot film. 35mm through the camera lens only, and have only recently ordered a guide scope. I face the same learning curve as everyone. Polar alignment, drift alignment, guiding, guide scopes, all have been things folks here have helped me with even though the media I use is film.
Someone let me know if I'm posting in the wrong forum.

Nope, keep on posting those questions here. Film specific questions will be better answered in the film forum though.
There are no hard and fast boundaries in the imaging forums, inasmuch as we are all imaging the same objects, and often using the same techniques for image aquisition and processing no matter what media we are using. There is and always will be some amount of natural overlap. Common sense as always is the best approach.

I like the open approach we have now in this forum. A good general place to ask questions where the equipment used is not the most important factor when deciding what is on topic or not.

I apologize as one of the interlopers who posted DSLR questions here. I am brand new to imaging and this seemed like the right place (without reading the fine print) for a newbie to get advice. I do like Erika's thought though - this could a great place for people to get their feet wet in imaging regardless of the equipment used - then they could move on to a more specific area when they have more technical questions related to the specific imaging equipment they are using.
Again, apologies to all....
