Moon Close to Jupiter new
      #386009 - 03/25/05 08:01 PM Attachment (149 downloads)

After imaging tonight, I noticed a possible moon almost sitting on Jupiter. Could anyone tell me if this is an actuall moon or just a hot spot?

Well you didnīt say what time it was... but it so happened that I had a peek at Jupiter around 22:55 UT and noticed that a moon was right on the disk. So I looked it up

Thanks everyone,
They are my first images of jupiter, I was really struggling to focus on the planet, so I focused on saturn (which I have imaged about 3 times before and was very easy to focus on at the time) and then did a goto to jupiter and just started imaging.
I'm using a Meade LX 200 GPS 10" with the LPI, I have the DSI but can not get good images with it.
Here are two of my saturn images, the first one is straight from the LPI, the second was through a 2x barlow. My telescope was dewing up bad when the second image was taken, so is not as clear as I would have liked.

Congrats Dave

Two very nice images of Jupiter and Saturn.
Have you tried to process the barlowed image yet? It seems that a even better image will come out.

Hi Dave, nice pictures. As you're using the LPI, did you leave "edge enhance hard" filtering on for the Saturn one? It's worth turning it off, make sure you're saving all frames and then let registax do its work, the result with wavelet filtering usually turns out better than the LPI software IMHO.

Ben.

Ralph, I have tried to process the barlowed image, I find too much proccessing makes the image grainy. I'll attach the original to this post, if anyone wants to try to process the image, they're welcome.
Ben, I did have EdgeEnhanceHard filtering on, is it better to have no filtering at all, or to try one of the others?

I've tried saving all images as fits, but I never seem to be able to get anything from them (even with registax) so I just save as a bitmap now.

Here is the original barlowed saturn...

Nice one Corn, I use Photoshop for all my processing, I wouldn't like to be without it.
Do you know of any good software for studying the movement of moons around planets?

Thanks

This one is free -> http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/
Just gotta zoom in on the planets and when you get close it will show the moons too (and movment).

Guess there are a lot of java applets on the web too.
Try google -> "Jupiter moon java"

Thanks Corn, I downloaded that program months ago but never installed it. I thought it was just for printing star maps.

Guess I better install it.

Dave,

I am quite sure as well that was a moon you were looking at. I too was out last night around midnight and saw the same thing. The moon was so bright I could not get many good shots of Jupiter, but here is an over exposed image of Jupiter and the 2 moons. I suspect I got this picture slightly after you got yours.

Dave,

Your images are excellent. I could not seem to get Jupiter to resolve last night. I kept getting massive light on the planet, I assumed it was from the full moon, but your images are excellent and it looks like we are actually using the same type of scope. I wounder why my images were so over exposed? I am using V-Record and I turned down the brightness as much as I could last night, but still nothing. Anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

So like you Dave I spent a lot of time imaging Saturn last night, the conditions were very good, very little atmosphere. But my best image does not seem to be as good as any of yours. Below is the best picture I got of Saturn. Can anyone suggest what I might do to improve? I am using a ToUCam Pro2 840K, V-Record and Registax. I am not sure if my problem is in the inital imaging, or in registax.

2 Other quick Questions:

1. Can someone tell me what that proper orientation of Saturn should be after it's processed? Is it like Dave's?

2. Is there a good online resource to help me identify the moons I am looking at when I see Jupiter? In my pic about I thought IO was the moon to the right and Europa the one to the left.

Thanks! This is a great thread!
It was very good to see pictures of the same planet I was trying for last night.. hehe if not a little discouraging!

Dave

I don't find it to grainy to edit the image. I run it through 3 programs (Resizing, wavelet and de-noise):

Ralph
