I received a call from High Point today. It seems the binos came from Burgess with 17mm ep's instead of the 20mm ep's originally planned. They were asking whether I wanted to wait or would take the 17's. I told them the 17's were fine and they promised shipping today or tomorrow.

Yep,

A binoviewer in the hand is worth more than a pair of EPs on order.

i won't. i'm thinking about cancelling my order now. what if there's a different reason that they're shipping them with the 17mm ep's instead of the 20mm? maybe the 20mm caused vignetting and they don't want to admit it. after learning a bit more about burgess, i'm a little leary...

You could always call Burgess directly and just ask? I would do that before cancelling....it's possible they didn't have enough 20's on hand.

Hi Guys,

I have found that I really like my 18mm Radians in the Burgess binoviewer unit. I think you will like the 17mm EPs just fine. If you do not have a binoviewer already, you will be amazed at the difference two eyed viewing will make.

There are always deals on this site and other sites that will let you add to your EP collection. The good news is that you will only want to get the upper half of this image. That is until you get your 2 " units.

Don:

I tried, but could not see a pair of 25mm plossls in that amazing display.

That's what I have waiting for my Burgess "C" unit. According to TV the field stop is 21.2mm on these, and that should be perfect for the 22mm CA Burgess unit.

If I'm not happy with those once I get a chance to test them, the 18mm Radians you mention are my next plan. Field stop on them is 18.3mm. I have a pair of 14mm Radians I use in my Denk unit and I love them. I modified them by removing the sliding piece and adding winged eye guards.

I'm looking forward to the Burgess unit for two reasons. First, the Denk's are just too heavy in my small refractor to balance the way I'd like on my alt/az head. Second, having to pull out the Denks, remove the reflector OCS and power switch and put on the refractor power switch is a pain and defeats the "grab and go" reason I have the refractor at all. Once the Burgess unit gets here I will put the Denk reflector power switch on it and it will stay in place on the refractor.

Here's a picture of a modified Radian, with a "normal" one in place for comparison.

I got my Burgess back at the end of January. I wanted 17mm eyepieces, but at that time Highpoint had only 20mm! I had little choice, so I accepted them. Since then I have added a pair of 23mm Axioms from Astromart, two 25mm Ultrascopics (already had one) and added an $8 Celestron 15mm plossl to another I had already. All of these eyepieces work very well in the BB, no hint of vignetteing and even the kit type Celestron plossls have surpassed my expectations. Erik, the BB is the best bargain in astronomy, believe me.

That's interesting. I didn't know you could do that. Where'd you get the finger grip portion of the modified one?

Mark,

Yes you are correct, I have no 25mm Plossls EPs. There is a pair of 24mm noname wides in there. I use them for public events. They have lots of glass and nice deep rubber eyeshields.

I did have a pair of Celestron 25mm SMAs at one point in time but I found I was not using them very much.

I do however have a pair of 24mm Ultras coming from Siebert Optics. They should be here Friday and I also just bought a pair of used 25mm Orthoscopics and they are on their way to me.
25mm Orthoscopics

I think both pairs will work well in my Burgess, Blacknights, and Denks.

I spoke with Bill Burgess back in March and he said that the 20mm EPs were about all gone and future Binoviewers would ship with 17mm EPs. I don't know if he ever intends to go back to 20mm again though.

that's a real bummer! ...when someone gets one of the new units, i'd like to know whether the clear aperture is still close to 22mm, or if it's narrower. that would explain the sudden change to 17mm ep's...

Tom:

The finger grip portion on the modified Radian is already on every Radian. When you remove the "instajust" piece (really very easy) the part you see is revealed. It's there when you fully extend the eye cup on a non-modified Radian.

The reason I did this is to save weight and to make the ep's smaller and narrower. I never liked the instajust feature anyway.
