Phoenix AZ observers out there? I need advice... new
      #447255 - 05/20/05 09:20 PM

Hey all. I'm going to be heading out to Phoenix to visit a buddy of mine next weekend. He told me to go ahead and bring the scope out and that he knew a place, but I'm a bit skeptical since he's not really an astro guy. I was wondering if anyone could tell me of a relativly good sight within about 30 miles of the phoenix area. Cleardarksky.com makes it look like you could drive just about anywhere and have some nice conditions, but if anyone knows of a surefire place I'd appreciate the help. Thanks

Coupla groups in Phoenix that would know the best sites are the East Valley and Saguaro Astronomy Clubs.
You might try contacting them.
They may even have something going on during your stay.

Thanks a bunch Saber. It looks like each of those clubs has more than one site they use and they all look relatively close to the main Phoenix area. One of them looks VERY dark, but it might be a bit far.

Now if I can just knock my buddy out and drive a bit farther....

Hi James,

Most of the Valley observers head north during the summer to get clear of triple digit temps. Cherry Road is the site of choice for many who want a relatively short drive to darker (and cooler) skies. Weather permitting, SAC members are gathering there on May 28.

For those who will be in Arizona the following weekend, June 3-4, you've got a couple of observing options: 5 Mile Meadow and the Grand Canyon Star Party.
