If you want to goto a star party that has extremely dark skies and is at an altitude of 8,800 feet, you'll want to go to the Rocky Mountain Star Stare.
It is a great event, laid-back, and you'll definitely remember the experience. Nothing like not being able to see your hand in front of our face and/or the Milky Way casting shadows on the ground.
And, it's one of the most affordable star parties in the country. Pre-registration is open now.

I've only been there once. 99' I think it was. I love that site! A beautiful meadow it is. I was wanting to come back this year but thats just not working out. Maybe next year. I was with a youngster ( 10 yr old) then who viewed the skies for the first time . Upon showing him M57 in my 10" scope for the first time he exclaimed..... " I see it, its a white donut! and there's a star right in the middle of it!" Ahhhhhhh to be young again. He had never seen any pictures of the PN so I can only say he did see it with naked eye. I'll always remember that about my first RMSS.

I was at the RMSS in 2001, the site they used then was about 5 miles south and to my taste superior to the one they use now. I was also dissapointed with the skies in CO. too dusty, if you can find dark in the Mid-West the sky is better.

I've never attended to a star party so i don't know how they are. I want to assist this year to RMSS but, since i live in Mexico city, i won't be able to take my scope with me. With some luck i'll have my binos by then, but that will be it. So... should I go anyway?

No matter how dusty the skies might be out there, it has to be better than the light-pollution filled nightmare that is central MD, where the Moon competes with airplanes for dominance of the skies...

You must have been there during the year where there was no rain (we're coming out of a water shortage) and wildfires from Arizona and New Mexico left some high altitude ash in the sky.
The National Forest Service requires us to rotate our sites each year. The one at Tarryall, is the club favorite and the one we are using this year.

I don't even bring my scope(s) to the RMSS. It's a great time to view some of those faint fuzzies through the many other large apeature scopes that are there.
