What size and mag bino.... new
      #3197 - 06/10/03 03:29 PM

What would your choice of aperture and magnification be for a tripod mounted binocular that would be used for "quick looks". It would compliment an 11" SCT/binoviewer combo and 10x50 binos already owned.

Opinions based on speculation, deep thought, and real world expierience welcome.

Depends on what you want a quick look at, for your neibors wife, Er...uh...sorry, for a quick look "at" most binocular objects, aperture, and magnification rule. If you already have 10X50's you like, then go big! Currently, I like my Fuji 16X70's but have some Burgess 25X100's on order. I like bino's with exit pupils between 4-6mm and apparent fields as wide as possible without introducing excessive coma. I don't mind a little curvature, but dont want stars elongating into crescents at the edge when the center of the field is in focus. I wear glasses, so eye relief of 16mm or more is a nice bonus too. One thing I will reccomend is a Unimount. Even if it costs more than the bino's, I think it's worth every cent. They can be used with any bino's, I've been through several pair since I bought this mount, and it just makes everything nicer to use. I like being able to kick back in a lawn chair, and observe anywhere in the sky without getting up. I like being able to locate an object then step away and let someone else see, even if we're not the same height. But that's just my opinion, worth every cent you paid for it. JDBraddy

I have Vixen 20X80WA. They are nice but a mount is needed. I also have a short tube 80mm refractor. As a COMFORTABLE quick look tool, the refractor is better as well as being more versatile. The binoculars are a real pain in the neck with anything over 45 degrees above the horizon. The 90 degree diagonal in the ST 80 make everything very comfy. Also you can change eyepieces so the useful magnification range is 12X to about 60X. The scope does not handle powers over 60X very well. The reason I'm mentioning the ST 80 is that your binoviewer may work with it.

15x70s on a light weight tripod. They are about 75-80% of the way between 10x50s and 20x80s. Very light weight, prbably <10# setup. very portable. Leave them mounted, stand them up in a corner and throw them over your shoulder any time you want to walk out the door. If you want to take them off the tripod and try to hold them sometimes, you probably could.

Pat,
I thought you were going to get the Oberwerk 25 x 100s. Que paso?

I can understand people liking the 16 x 70 Fuji's but I had a pair and couldn't accept the flare on bright objects (plus they were out of collimation and I just didn't want to mess with that process).

Seems like you have a number of choices but here's two for consideration: a pair of 20 x 80s or just get it over with and go for the 25 x 100s. Wait, there's another choice. I think there is a pair of 20 x 90 or 25 x 90 Russian binos that looked interesting. Oh yes, and definitely get that Unimount or forget about any viewing overhead for longer than 2 seconds.

Good luck and it will be interesting to hear how this thing plays out. Nick

Soooo close! Filled out the order a couple times then deleted it.

The real problem is that I once told myself that if my 15x70's ever get replaced it would be with 45 degree binos.
That puts me up into $1300 territory (for the new Oberwerks 20/40x100). It is a new product and I think I will wait till the reviews are out, or I get a chance to try them. For now they are back on the wish list.

I really like having the 15x70's on a tripod, ready near the door for those times I don't feel like messing with a scope and eyepieces. But my tripod will handle bigger binos...and they look so good in the ads...and you guys need someone to check them out (can't wait for Ron)....and my brother has offered to store the 15x70's...

Dang...now I have to go to the Oberwerk site and just look at them again...

Pat;

Go ahead and get them. We need a patsy, I mean an experienced user to review them. If they don't work out, just tell your brother how great they are but you need a new pair of naglers and sell them to him.

At the rate I'm going, I won't see binoviewers until I retire.

That used to work! Really!

Ron, you mentioned one time about volunteering at an air rifle competition. I thought you might get a kick out of this. Back when Daisy was located in Preston (now Cambridge) Ontario, they used to run safety courses and competitions. I won this the year after I got my first Jackalope, mid to late 1950's.

Now I have to go change all those postings I made. That patch says RifleMAN and I know they just don't hand them out to just anybody.

When did you change your name from Daisy?

I did good this past weekend. I'll send a note off site to ya.

Have u ever considered getting rid of the tripod...and the 15x70 as well? If u want something to do multiple things, find a dealer near u & ck out the Canon 15x50IS. That thing is astounding for its size. Probably has as good an optical complement as any bino extant. No mention of multicoating, phase coating, etc;only "Super Spectra" coating (Canon's inhouse secret receipe, I imagine). This is a roof glass and u see absolutely no spikes on bright stars, no ghosting...and it has nearly the dark-sky reach of the 16x Fuji (which I have on the block on ebay as this is written) and virtually equal resolving power. AFOV is 67*, eye relief is 15mm and with or without the stabilizer, the view is as sharp as my Nikon 12x50se (and that's saying something). The Canon is as close to an all-purpose, do-it-all bino as you'll find, due to its amazing close focus and very reasonable size & wt for a 15x glass (abt 42oz)...very well balanced and a fine fit in the hands. The glitches (nothing is perfect)....lousy eyecups and very stiff rt side diopter adj (but it stays put)...the ipd adj is stiff too, but that has to do with the waterproofness, I think. You can get one for a lot less than list ($1150 or so)...I got mine from a dealer in Vancouver on ebay for $770 (not a gray mkt model, either). Of the 35-40 binos I've owned over the last few yrs, this is probably the most versatile...give it a try
