Where do I begin?
      #499420 - 07/02/05 12:03 AM

I want to get started in imaging but where do I begin? I currently own a Meade LPI and a Laptop, however, I find myself wanting a new digital camera. So I am considering a DSLR setup. The two choices I am researching are Olympus EVOLT 300 Digital SLR and Canon Digital Rebel XT. I currently use an Olympus C-760 UZ for everyday digital photography.

My current scopes are: Meade LX-90 and WO Megrez 80 SD II. I can mount the WO 80mm to the LX-90 or alone on an Orion SVP eq mount.

Thoughts on the the current choices are appreciated. I am still researching and I have not sold myself that I need to invest in a new camera yet. Perhaps there is more I can do with what I have...

I also have a 35mm film SLR...but that's for another post.

Later,
Mark

the cannon has a lot larger following in the astro dept..
so unless lens can be swaped back and forth, like having an older nikon and buying a d70 ..then i would go for the rebel....but that is just my thoughts.

What are your goals in astrophotography? For planetary an lunar imaging you can do a lot with the LPI. If you want to do deep sky it's best to buy a dedicated camera. A DSI would be a good start. I guess it would be much cheaper than the canon too. Or take a look at the used market. You might find a used SBIG or other dedicated camerafor a reasonable price. These are great astro camera's and most will allow autoguiding. A feature you will come to like when doing long exposures. Besides that these camera's have low noise ands cooling to keep nois down.

best regards,

Wouter.

I have a chance to use a DSI from a freind. I'm going to play and learn with that device. I'm not sure what direction that will take me, but I have decided to use this opportunity to gain some experience prior to making a large purchase. I hope to post some pics soon, and, I'm sure I'll be back for advice.

Thanks again,
Mark
