seach the beginners forum, Kristen has one I think.

For GSO try searching Google Groups and Yahoo groups, for the money you won't hear a bad word said about the optics.

I'm happy with mine. Its just a GSO Dob, much like the ones that Hardin sold.

It has 2" Crayford, cooling fan, 2" aperture opening on the OTA cap [useful for moon until you get a polarising filter], the base is sufficently substantial; it has roller bearings instead of teflon pads (very smooth). The finder is good enough, and the GSO SP32mm 2" EP that came with mine is a good "finder" EP.

Edit: Focuser came with 2" to 1.25" adaptor

I've put a link at the bottom to my original comments, and the list of things I bought with it. Since then I've added:

10mm EP off an Orion.

I've replaced the GSO SP32mm with a Pan35 - but that is certainly not an essential purchase.

The Telrad is pretty essential IMO, and there's plenty of room between focuser and finder to mount it.

I transferred the DSC Controller from an Orion 6XTi - bought cheap on ebay.

I bought some decent 2" colimation tools from Jim Fly (and some cheap and cheerful 1.25" ones that were, mostly, a waste of money - far too much slop trying to collimate using the 2" to 1.25" adaptor)

A grand, possibly a couple of hundred more, would be a sensible budget.

Couple of things to note:

This thing is seriously heavy and awkward to carry. If you have got to come down a flight of steps, transport the scope to a viewing location in a car, or even get it out of the front door [mine's in the garage] then you might want to consider the 10" instead - its half the weight.

I'm going to add "wheel barrow handles" to mine so I can get it onto the lawn in one piece, rather than 2 trips.

The centre spot [reinforcing ring thingie] was 2~3mm off centre :-(

The cooling fan takes 8 AA batteries, and they don't last long (obviously some other sort of power source is possible)

I feel it needs flocking, and needs a dew control system.

It probably needs a parracor, and a few more EPs, but basically a grand and you have got a spectactular scope and a reasonable set of accessories.

Here's a link to my original First Light and Revelation "Review"

They're well nigh identical to the no longer sold but famous Hardin dobs.

So, since I have the celestron 1.25" ep set , I should get a 2" to 1.25" ep adaptor, yes? Thanks a million for that link, and the info Kristin, cheers

The adaptor comes with the scope and fits into the focusser, all your EP will work fine.

Nope. All large GSOs have been shipping with that Crayford focuser (which, BTW, looks identical to the one of the *Synta* ED80 - I wonder who makes them) for some time.

2" focusers usually ship with an adapter.

Just to add that I got the 10" Revelation Dob and I absolutely love it.It's got to be one of the best bargains I've ever bought. I was 50/50 about the 12" or 10" but decided on the 10" as it was a shorter tube and a lot cheaper considering the 2" difference. However, deep down my heart really wishes it was a 12" but my back thanks me it's 10. All in all, they're both fantastic scopes.

My only new worry when i get it will collimating it. I have no idea how to . I assume a cheshire would be better than a laser ( due to the 2" - 1.25" reducer slop - maybe?). Or should I buy a 2" collimator? Either way, I cant wait til this thing arrives..
