Dave any tips for macro photography? My LCD screen doesn't have the resolution to show if the pic is in focus or not. It's just a real pain when I take a pic, and download it onto my pc, only to find it's out of focus.

Mark, I have the same problem. I put it in Macro mode, turn off the flash, and zoom in before I press the shudder button in half way for auto focus. You can generally tell if it has focused on something else instead. Next I take several photos to make sure that at least one of them took well.
Also, if it's a bit dark outside or in the area you are taking a photo, make sure to hold the camera very steady or else the shutter speed will be so slow to allow more light in that you run the risk of the photo coming out blurry from the tiniest bit of movement.
One of the guys recommended focusing and then gently moving the camera back and forth until the feature is in focus. But my LCD screen doesn't show good enough for me to tell.
There's a thread somewhere in this forum about Macro shots that is a big help.

Oh, and thanks Stevie and Dave! Also on the ID for the centipede. You'd think all these years of gardening, I'd know all these bugs better.

Mark, there`s a lot of good info on this site, under the "how to" link, ive looked through it myself a few times http://www.beautifulbugs.com/ With my 20D i`ll focus using the auto focus but at times the small subject will freak the thing out and it wants to focus on something else, so if i can get a half descent focus using auto fucus i`ll then switch to manual and move the camera in or out, i never rely on the LCD i always use the viewer. I do have the ability on the 20D to preview the shots on the LCD and use the zoom feature to zoom in on the image and check the focus but i dont find it necessary very often to do so. BTW, what kind of camera are you using ?

I was going to mention those are centipedes yesterday but my internet connection died
Anyway, you know the whole saying about the bug being more afraid of you than you are of it? This saying does NOT apply to centipedes. They're MEAN.

This first one I believe to be "Libery Cap", Psilocybe semilanceata. But it could be P. pelliculosa as that variety is known for growing in wood chips, which is where this photo was taken.
Hello Erika,
They don't look like the Liberty Caps I knew of. For one thing, they have a 'nipple' (for want of a better description) on top of the cap (don't ask me how I know!). The ones in your picture do not, though they do look very similar.
Also, the Liberty tends to grow in ancient meadows that have been grazed by cattle, at least I believe that to be the case.
Another thing, they tend to die back as the day goes on, so are normally seen early (ish) in the morning before the sun gets up high.

Thanks ...these died as the day went on too, but maybe it could be the P. pelliculosa then as it grows in mulch and wood chips.

1 inch? HAH! maybe the BABY ones! I've killed a centipede about 5 inches long (after I nearly had a heart attack when it ran over my foot). I know some can get to 8" or more, but thankfully I've never seen one THAT big...

Looks like it's time to revive this thread!
Here's a few pix of some mushrooms we found along Lake Superior last week (while traveling through the land of cheese).
Enjoy!
