Atlas EQ-G?
      #593932 - 09/10/05 07:48 AM

Hi all,

Does anyone know how the Atlas EQ-G (alias Skywatcher EQ6 with Skyscan) performs as an imaging platform? Any comparisons to other mounts?

Thanks,

Patrick

Thanks Dimitrir,

Do you know if there's an English version?

That's for the EQ-6 - the EQ-G is supposed to have improved motors (and worms, perhaps?)

The motors (actually the motors and transmissions) are much better than the original EQ-6/Atlas. This removes the primary cause of backlash in the mount, the original DEC and RA reduction gears (transmission). Since I have an older (1.75 year old) Atlas that I modified with the same hardware now going into the "G", I can't say if the worms are upgraded in the newer mounts.

I haven't yet got around to taking my mount apart to clean, regrease and/or lap the worms and wheels. Even so, I've gotten reasonable performance out of the mount, although I think about two minutes exposure time is the outside max that I can go and still get a reasonable ratio of good frames to bad (unguided - still haven't got around to trying my hand at autoguiding). A minute and a half is better, and the vast majority of frames at 60 seconds are good to go.

Not too shabby for the price.
