Eyepieces - Orbinar new
      #2597647 - 08/22/08 11:03 PM

Has anyone ever heard of Orbinar eyepieces?

I was hunting around on a certain well-known auction site, and ran across this brand, apparently from Germany (?). The WA EPs looked pretty sharp, had good specs, and the sales pitch focused on all the right attributes. I tried to find a website for Orbinar using Altavista (if Alta can't find it, it probably ain't there), with no avail.

Just when I think I may have the Eyepieces buyer's guide fairly complete, along comes someone who informs me of a brand I've never heard of, and there are filters and other stuff under the name!!
My thanks to Willee and I'll see to adding this stuff to all the buyer's guides.
Oh goodie, more new stuff.

Thanks to Don for the reply and links.

I wish I had logged on before doing more hunting. However, I already had hunted some more, and discovered that Orbinar is put out by a German company called Seben (www.seben.com).

It's hard to tell if they are really a manufacturer, or if they are just a European reseller with their name on their products (e.g. Konus). Their scope line-up looks like Synta-like Chinese stuff. Can't tell if the eyepieces are that as well. Certainly nothing wrong if they are - if the performance is there, that's what matters.

I don't know if I'll try the Orbinars. If someone else tries them and does a review, then I might. I am leaning toward giving Mr. Russell a try for 2" eyepieces.

My original plan when I bought my new Astro Tech 2" diagonal was to go with UO Konig MK's to begin a 2" collection, but UO changed my plans by no longer carrying the MK Konigs. If I can find a 40mm UO second-hand, I'll probably go with that. However, I tried a friend's 25mm UO, and had to rack in the focuser all the way to barely focus, and also had some coma issues at the edge - this with an F/8.3 refractor. His 40mm UO was awesome. So, I may hold out for a used 40mm UO, but I plan to try another brand for the 20 - 25mm range - maybe Russell, maybe Orbinar, or possibly Siebert - don't know yet.

I believe Orbinar is a private label for the German firm Seben.
