How To Modify a Canon 400D/Xti - Picture Tutorial new
      #2988197 - 03/17/09 01:48 AM

Many of you know that you can find instructions on how to modify the Canon 300D, 350D, 40D, Xsi, Xs, etc but there is a gap for the 400D. I could be mistaken but I have never found any on the net. So I went ahead and filled in that gap. Here is my picture tutorial on how to modify the Canon 400D/Xti:

https://xythos.lsu.edu/users/jcham21/400d/

It is not the best tutorial in the world, but it will give you a little more confidence in opening up your camera. I had to use a really old digital camera to take the pictures, so sorry for the poor quality.

The mod process is just like the 350D except the filter frame is totally different. The 400D filter frame is nothing like the newer model Canon's either. Working the infrared filter out is a little tricky because the filter frame stays attached to the piezo element and two wires.

Of all the cameras I modded (300D, 350D, 40D, Xs, Xsi), the 400D is probably the most difficult in my opinion.

Let me know if anything is unclear or if you have any questions.

This was also one of my first websites I ever made. I will most likely make it better later on.

I looked for one also and didnt like the fact that there was no pictures so thanks very much for doing this.

Because there was no tutorial out there for a 400D I couldnt bring myself to do it and I chickened out and sent it to a professional and from what you said im glad I did

Looks like a good tutorial. The yellow is bit hard to see in some spots.

Makes me want to send to a pro to do with all the cracking and cutting involved.

Hi James and everyone,

This is an old thread, but it´s the only tutorial I´ve found in the web. But the link seems to be broken.

Is it not longer available?

Any other suggestions?

TIA.

Thanks Erik.

I did not find Gary´s tutorial for 400D, but I did find this one in Spanish. It´s quite good.

Looks like my LSU website got taken down. Sorry about that.

You can find pictures of the tutorial here:

Hope that helps, good luck with your mod!

There should be no need for calibration if you replace the stock UV/IR cut filter with a baader and keep the anti-aliasing (AA) filter over the baader. A calibration may be needed if you remove the AA filter. I only have the AA filter in mine and focus is OK but slightly off.
