Kern Focalpin Binoculars service? new
      #3018274 - 04/01/09 03:17 PM

After 30 years of looking (!) I finally found a pair of Kern 10x60 Focalpin binoculars and bought them.

They appear to be collimated, and the exterior glass surfaces are clean, but the image is a little hazy and holding them up to the light and looking through the objectives there is an uneven light brown tint.

Otherwise they appear to be in excellent condition.

I presume they need to be disassembled and cleaned.

Way back when, I was told this model is nitrogen filled. I don't know if this is true.

Where is the best place to send something like this for service?

Difficult question, as the focalpin as you know has an unique focus system that some service centres might not want to touch. A great looking binocular though, I'm quite envious!

I have a Focalpin 10x60 (inherited from my father) which was a bit hazy. I got it serviced via
Augenoptik Meerkämper
Promenade 63
CH-7270 Davos Platz
Switzerland
Phone 0041 81 410 04 04
Fax 0041 81 410 04 05
E-Mail: optik [at] meerkaemper [dot] ch

This cost me CHF 284 back in 2007. Now it's like new and I'm happy with it.

There are Kern and Wild history collector literature sites, dealing with mostly surveying equipment, but you might find a lead there.
I fixed a smaller one of those in the 1970's. I believe that I still have it.

This is an old thread, so hope you won't mind a bit of a hijack. But if these are so hard to find ( thirty years YIKES!), what are they worth?

Thanks,

Hi

Back in 1978, the camera store I worked for had a pair in almost new condition with straps and the case, and they wanted $750.

On these things minor differences in condition can have a huge impact on value.

There aren't enough of them on the market to predict a market value, but rare items of exceptional quality tend to appreciate.
