Welcome to Cloudy Nights!

There was a 114EQ-DH and a 114EQ-DH4; the DH version came with only an RA motor, to provide automatic tracking of objects. The DH4 cersion came with both DEC and RA motors and a stripped-down Autostar unit called the Starfinder, which was an EQ version of the #494 Autostar. There was a hand controller (model EC) that would work with the DH4 to control tracking. The EC hand controller is readily available on eBay for $25 or so. I don't remember what controller the DH version used - perhaps the same one?

with a 4.5" scope, you can see hundreds of objects in some detail. but for many nebula, star clusters, and especially galaxies, you'll need a dark sky far from city lights. the moon and planets, however, can be viewed even in urban light pollution. i'd recommend a simple star chart and a red flashlight. that'll get you started. did it come with any eyepieces?

The telescope is better than those eyepieces will make it appear; it deserves better.

Ignore the Barlow for now. It was included only so they could advertise that telescope as being capable of unreasonably high magnifications.

That telescope comes with a 2" focuser but a .965" eyepiece holder. If you call Meade and tell them you need a 1.25" eyepiece holder for that telescope they will send you one at no charge. Then you can use the inexpensive 1.25" Plossls that are very readily available these days.

great advice! used plossls can be had for next to nothing, and they're WAY better than the ep's that came with the scope...

That's unusual but I don't see any right now either.

Try Bill Vorce ; he'll have some. They won't be on the website but an email should bring results.

Yeah, the single axis one (RA tracking/slewing) is the unusual type (Meade 04401). That one is very similar with the LXD300 single axis RA drive motor model, known as Meade #535. Same idea/design but different code in the inside PIC micro. It's due to different worm ratio.

But one thing to take away is these two RA-only models do not have any AutoStar controller capability. The handbox only has 2 contact closure leads. "<" shorts one to the common wire, ">" shorts the other, while "SPEED" shorts both.

EC handbox with screw "A" shorted will enable tracking (when go with the DH4 motor pair), but the tracking speed is not right for 4500 EQ mount due to wrong worm ratio.

Welcome to CN!

If your motor unit is the single one with a hard-wired coiled cable going out, the terminal of such coiled cable has a tiny/narrower 4-connecor telephone-like jack (RJ-10 or RJ-22), then that's the Meade "Special" one RA motor version. If your handbox for that unit is missing, I can tell you the wiring diagram so you can make one. Just 2 switches and a RJ-10 socket. Push one go Left, the other Right. Both simultaneously, SPEED.

You might still have the standard issue .965" eyepieces.
Please check dimension of these eyepieces. If that's the case, please call Meade cust support to ask for the free 1.25" focuser tube adapter. Free shipping (to US) too.

In the mean time, happy shopping for 1.25" eyepieces.
If you consider new eyepieces, as a starter, I would suggest GSO superview 10mm and 20mm. Burgess 6mm "garage sale" one is VERY good.

Clear Skies.

what's the focal length of your scope? that will determine what size eyepieces you should get, because it determines the magnification for a given eyepiece...
