Here is a picture from the 2003 Mars appulse from 9-5. Sony 3 megapixel camera hand held over the focused eyepiece (135X) of a 6" reflector.

Why post a 2003 image of Mars? The planet is ripe for photos now at the 2005 opposition. But not bad for a handheld single shot. At least the polar caps and Syrus Major are identifiable..... A better image with stacks and processing.

Why? Well, to encourage others with minimum eqpt that it IS possible - you don't need fancy cameras and mounts, nor even clock drives - nor, for that matter, equatorial mounts - for objects that are bright enough for snapshots.
With a little imagination, a lot is doable - for instance, at the Venus transit, I simply photoed the projection screen, then balanced and cropped the resulting pictures with Microsoft Photoeditor, then put the series into PowerPoint and saved the slide as a jpg - here is what I got (not too shabby...)
