I noticed that smell Kenny, but thought it was the pouch until you just mentioned it.
A quick check and it is indeed the neckstrap - I've also just noticed that the bin itself smells a bit like a pencil eraser (well it is rubber-coated)

My tripod smells- don't know if its Davis or Sanford- somebody should tell one of them (or both, ughh). Its the lubricant on the center column (what's left of it- rather stiff now, but that's actually better since it means the thing is less likely to knock my on the chin as its spring discovers freedom- maybe this is relatable to the infamous "Chinese grease".

Thanks for your input. I so agree.

I will not post another post about the "tank" thing. Sorry NW; someone else will have to do this in my stead.

Regards,

Dave.

My goodness , Simon , I hadn't realised it was SO long ago since I started this thread !

Thanks for reviving it -- it was one of the most memorable ones I ever started -- back in the days when I DID start threads here .

Interesting aromas , too ! :-)

Pleasant smells
Kenny

When a new ebay purchace arrives for me at work, the first thing my mate does is give it the fust test.
The fust test is the rating of how bad they smell.
Fust factor one is no smell at all.
Fust factor 10 is the point of being ill!
Every binocular receives the fust test, it's as important as the optical performance!

I remember my very first pair of binoculars I ever purchased in the late 50's was a pair of used 7x35's with leather case and I loved the aroma.

This thread is useless. No educational value is derived from it and it shouldn't be here in the binocular forum. It should be in the OTO forum. I'm not being a grumpy old frump either, it just has nothing to offer someone coming here for the first time and reading it. They'll be sitting there reading this with a huge question mark over their head wondering what the deal is.

Hi all,

I enjoyed this thread a great deal. I found it quite interesting, because I even find the smell of some books to be pleasant, or conversely so. Over time, we should keep it going I believe.

Best regards,
Dave.

Over on birdforum there was recently a discussion of a test in which the "toxic vapors" emitted by binoculars were measured for a few brands, and ratings given. They were looking at expensive roof types, and the worst was Minox, and the best was Swarovski. It seems it's difficult to make a rubber type coating that is soft to touch without mixing in some volatile plasticisers, which tend to be pretty nasty chemicals.

For what it's worth, I have figured out how to eliminate the famous Fujinon FMT-SX odor! This winter, I got in the habit of warming my binos in the furnace/water heater cabinet before observing, to retard eye lens fogging, especially a problem on the close-relief 16x70. They'd come up to probably 110+ degrees F, and maybe sit there an hour or two at that temperature before I used them. Well, they never cracked or anything bad like that, and although the temperature gradients experienced in the poor binocular as it cooled down to the sometimes 10 degree nighttime temperature didn't do much to help image sharpness, at least I got some observing in. MOST IMPORTANTLY, however, I can report that as a result of the repeated "bake-out", the Fujinons don't have that smell any more! These binos aren't the ones with the rubber cladding, just the hard nubbly-finished stuff, but I guess it was either volatile compounds in the material, or glue holding it in place. Anyhow, I'm glad it's gone, it smelled bad to me.
Ron

Markus,

I respectfully disagree. This thread is THE most important post in the forum ever. It is entertaining, educational, and seminal. It's ramifications are far-reaching and it's potential for practical use is unlimited. I think it should be pinned to the top of forum and every member should include a link to it in their sig-line.

Given that some of the aromas arise from toxic mold or cancer-causing volatiles - this thread could SAVE LIVES. In fact, it may have saved lives already.
