Markus ,
I'm relieved that you can appreciate humour in this forum !
Given the tone of your post yesterday , I was beginning to worry about you , to be honest .
Trust me , this life can become VERY depressing , VERY quickly , without a sense of humour ! :-)

What an excellent thread.
Favourite - Helios 15x70: strong and pungent with an underlying antique-like scent, traditional, satisfying and probably the best feature of the binos
Most noxious - easily 16x70 old style FMT-SX: acrid, bitter and plasticy, not unlike a burnt tyre
Honourable mention - Fuji 10x50 FMT-SX new style:Fresh, perky and daring. a massive improvement over the above, clearly fuji has spent many Yen and man hours in the most important area of binocular engineering - olfactory excellence.

Maybe Mr. Bill, proud owner of the legendary Fujinon 25x150mm titanic binocular, could give us a report on the odor of his massive binos. Bill, do your binoculars smell?

OK...I'll play along.
Actually, I sold them last year but when I had them they smelled of sweat that occurred when lifting them up to mount.
Now that I have the BT100s, they smell of the money that I got back when I sold the Fujis.

Funny you should ask. Just the other night the smell of my rubber armoured 10x50s mixed with something in the air to remind me of my old tube-sniffing days with my RV-6 with its bakelite tube. Now that just "smells like astronomy" and makes me feel 13 again. Ooo, I can just faintly hear the music of The Twilight Zone flowing out the living room window and across the dew-soaked, freshly cut grass to where I stood at the eyepiece. Ahhh.

Kenny,
It will be hard for the west to keep up with the likes of this. If Asia does take over the world, at least they have a sense of humor.

I just bought a pair of used 25 x 150MT's when you take the objectives cover it smells "like new" (I liked it since somehow, it indicated me their excellent condition) of course, I checked a lot more things but smell.... Anyway, they have a particular smell in the objectives, like the plastic case in a new computer... sorry I cant be more specific about the smell

All right. I bit. I smelled my Canon 12x36is and 15x15is bins.
A distinct odour of egg on my face.

Putting frivolity aside for a moment ( if such a notion could possibly make sense in such a thread ) I wonder if anyone can tell us what exactly it WAS about certain NEW binoculars from Japan in the 1960s that gave them such a distinctive aroma ?

Well Hi Kenny,
I suppose that the aroma from Japan came from some of their materials that THEY used in THEIR mfg. process.
Probably not like we Americans and British used then or nowadays.
They certaintly had different lubricants, paints, and outer coatings. Anyway, I have smelt that aroma too, and I like it, basically. Again, just my thoughts.
Best regards, Dave.

It could be that these smell like whatever the packer had for lunch and on his/her hands.
