I know these are really small for Astronomy purposes, but I was considering them as pocket bino's that I could always have with me. The other purpose they would serve is for quick scanning to help locate objects for my scope. Does anyone have experience with Roof Prism bino's, or other bino's used simply to assist in finding objects for a scope? These are FMC and look to be a good choice for the things I want to do with them. How much brighter are 50mm bino's? Realize that these will not change my intention of getting the 11x56mm for handheld astro duty. These are just intended as easy carry, always present, finder duty, and quick glance bino's.
O.K. guys - lets hear what you think.....

Scott, I know you're asking the more learned folks here, but I do have the Nikon 8x40 Actions (porro) and they are great terrestrial and finder binocs. I will one day sell them and upgrade to a higher quality binoc in this size for my hiking endeavors and find the size very usable. I like the size and feel of the roof design, especially in this size.
And now back to your regularly scheduled question...

Thanks Tom,
You hit it on the head. Occasional Astro duty when nothing else is available, finder duty, always available bino's. They should be pretty sharp, with good light throughput due to FMC. I know it is only 42mm, but there are observers using 7x35's who find interesting things in the sky - so I should be able to find "something". Small size/decent aperture combo is hard to find but these just might be the "keep in the truck" bino's. I have been driving down dirt roads and looked up to see the sky as only a dark night can show it. Stop the truck, get out, let eyes adapt and just look up for about an hour. Wishing I had bino's with me. These would have been great for that. 15x70's on a monopod would have been even better...
I just don't want to hang big bino's from my neck while scope observing - but I want something to help me locate the brighter M-objects.

EQ mount takes up too much room in the back seat. If I didn't have to haul my kids around I sure would...
The old lady gets upset when I say the kids have to walk because my scope had "dibs" on the back seat !!!!!
Sometimes she just doesn't see things the way I do...

It seems like a great pair of binoculars. I'm just going to make another suggestion for you to consider. Instead of getting Oberwerk's 8x42mm and 11x56mm you could get the Cannon 10x30mm IS. I think you can buy it new for around $250. Although the exit pupil is small, the lack of shakes would more than make up for it. It has a 6* FoV and I'm pretty sure is sharp almost to the edge. What do you think?

I realize that IS bino's have a huge leap in performance over non stabilized handheld bino's, but I just want a goof around finder set of bino's. Nothing serious. The 56mm binos would be for dedicated astro duty, and if they had the shakes - I would add a mount of some type, thereby giving myself a set of "stabilized" 56mm bino's. If they are relatively easy to handhold, I will forgo the mount. I like nice equipment, but I am on a shoestring budget for Astro gear. $250.00 is $49.00 short of the 20x90's I want. I do see your point though.

Scott,
I think 8 x 42 is about as close one can get to a "perfect" all round hand -held binocular specification.
Go for it -- you will not regret your decision.
Kenny.

I see nothing illogical in your choice.
I have a pair of 8x42 swift Ultralites that work fine as finders, even provide some pretty good sweeping views. At 21 ounces (0.6kg) they are very light around the neck on a hike.

"Cannon 10x30mm IS"
Just for the record, Canon (two "n"s) makes optics.
