Better yet, we need to try and pick a specific day/time/place to meet up; even with photos, as big and crowded as I've heard TSP is, we could know what we each look like and still not see each other! Did I see elsewhere, Faith, that you won't be there until sometime Tuesday? I'm coming Sunday, what about the rest of you?

Thanks for the info, DavidM (and Rusty)! Google and Yahoo were both trying to send me south off I-20 starting in Odessa, which seemed stupid, and both saying about 11 hours, which also seemed stupid, which is why I was looking for a "real world" estimate. 9 is about what I was hoping to hear. David, I live down in Waxahachie, so I'll be hitting I-20 pretty much at the start.

Yes, that's right Steph, I'll be arriving on the Tuesday afternoon sometime.
Good idea about picking a time and place to meet as well.

Hi Steph, 9 hours is a walk in the park

I'm figuring on about 24-27 hours driving time and plan on leaving Friday night and take my time, yea right. Is this at all like the WSP where people get in line the night before?

You can do pics in PM, Ron, if they're already on CN or the web somewhere. Just bring 'em in using IMAGE tags.

Dean, I don't envy you your drive, or the California guys either.

Yeah.... Darrell, Dennis and I are arriving on Sunday as well after a long drive from Northern California. Leaving on Friday morning, crashing in Tuscon, then a nice 500 mile drive to TX, crash and take our time to TSP.

I can't wait.

Steph,

If you live in Waxahachie, you may be able to shave at least half an hour or more off since you will more or less just be rounding FW instead of going through it and the mid-cities (which I will unfortunately have to do from Plano).

I will probably arrive in Fort Davis Saturday morning and stay at the state park that night and check in the next day (my usual MO).

See you there!

Faith and Steph, that is a pretty good idea, so we can actually meet words with faces, etc. lol

I forgot to mention that I'll set up in the upper field with a 30" StarMaster, so I shouldn't be missed. Pictures of me and my telescopes are in the appropiate photos section here at cloudy nights. I think that may be the best place to stick photos, etc.

LOL...It might be easier than you think to miss one at TSP. There will probably be 3-36" scopes (Larry's, Crazy Bob's, and those guys from N.E.) and several 25-28" class scopes there.

David (who will have a mere pea shooting 17.5" which looks pretty tiny in the TSP yard).

Okay, I've sent PMs to some of the folks who posted earlier in the thread that they might be coming, to try and get a head count and list of who's actually coming, to see if maybe we can set a specific day/time. If Faith is the latest arrival on Tuesday, I was thinking maybe lunch on Wednesday? What do y'all think?

Doesn't mean we won't meet up somewhere along the way beforehand, but that could be kind of an "official" get-together.

Steph,

Thanks for letting me know about this thread, as I wasn't aware it existed until last night!

There's a buy/sell/swap and announcement board outside the registration and dining building where people can post announcements. That would be a good place to post any meeting schedule changes. How about meeting at the registration area's lounge at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday to go for chocolate malts at the Fort Davis Pharmacy after the lunch crowd is gone? That way the bunkhouse folks will get their prepaid meal, and the campers can buy lunch if they want to.

Last year Dennis and I were trying to locate another bay area observer whom we'd never met. We were each emailing to a mailing list 1400 miles away in order to locate the other guy who was about 100 yards away on the observing field. We finally found each other through a mutual friend who'd observed with both of us, and by describing our distinctively striped tent canopy.

Darrell! Welcome to the bottom of the CN Forums!

Yummm, chocolate malts sounds good to me. And that's an excellent thing to know about the message board, that way if someone can't make it, they can let us know too. Should we use that as kind of a "check-in" too, to let each other know we made it? If I post an announcement of the get-together when I get there Sunday, we could add our names or check off our names if I list them or something like that as we each get there?

That's funny about having so much trouble finding someone that's so close, but I have to believe it's so true when there's that many people around and you can't just direct them to the "big dob" or the "green tent by the SCT".

Steph,

Yes, I think we could sign in at the message board area. I wish I could remember if there are any restrictions about its use.

TSP is a huge star party. At other star parties, you can just ask people if they know someone by his name, or you can navigate from an unusual scope, like the 16" binocular telescope. At TSP, there are so many big truss Dobs and so many dozens of big SCTs, it gets confusing real fast. If you tell someone you're located next to a 25" Obsession, they're going to have a lot of trouble figuring out which 25" Obsession you're talking about.

Sign me up for the chocolate malt....I'm arriving early and will check the message board frequently. It would be great for a bunch of CN'rs to get together.

I'll just tag along, so sign me up. As I know quite a few observers around the country, but never met them face to face as I almost never travel out of Cali for star parties. I still can't believe that being in this hobby for 35 years I still haven't traveled far for gatherings like these.

I'll also be at the Vendor area representing faintfuzzies.com (observing guides)

Hey Alvin,

One of these years I'm gonna make it over to TSP too.

By the way, I really enjoy using your Hickson guide. Great observing tool.
