One thing I'd appreciate (since I won't be in the audience), is a photo of me when I'm giving my birding presentation Tuesday night. I'm hoping if you CN participants pack the audience, that it'll be as large as the one for the Probing for Gravitational Waves with LIGO presentation
Darrell,
I'll be there too. And I'll make sure that I get a mug shot of you during your talk with my 120-300 f/2.8 lens. No problem. I was about to talk about the challenge of observing Hicksons and Abell PNe's during one of the afternoon short talks, but I backed off as I wasn't 100% sure of myself.
BTW, I just got hammered again last weekend and feel fine now. I caught a mild strain of a stomach flu from one of my daughter's friend's birthday party, totally unrelated to what I got earlier. My immune system is shot to h__l now, and need to be careful of what I eat in the coming days. I wonder how the food is at Prude Ranch as I got one of those bunkhouse/meal deals.

Alvin,
The food is pretty darn good at Prude Ranch. It's assembly-line food, but as good as it gets from a cafeteria.

Only a few days to go now until I am on my way from the gloomy UK to sunny (I hope) Texas.
One thing that gives me the willies is the thought of going through Immigration at the airport. I've heard a few horror stories...

Don't worry about immigration...it is pretty cut and dried and only takes a few minutes, a few questions and a few finger prints if you aren't an American citizen. Fill out the forms on the flight over and have them ready for the officers when they ask for them. The worst part is waiting in line to get through.

Well, if the UK gives you any grief about re-entry, just turn around and come on back.

I agree with Snorkler's assessment of the food. In addition to the food being pretty good, mealtime in the dining hall is the best opportunity to relax and socialize. And it's shady and cool and out of the wind.

And another thing...bring a swimsuit. There's a nice indoor pool.

Kurt! You found the TSP thread, I see. So did you see the post just a few up from this one from me (or from way earlier in the thread) about lunch on Wednesday? Can you join us?

You have to be careful, or the people who sit at your table may recruit you to give a preseantation at next year's TSP
I never found an indoor pool. There probably is one, but I don't know where it's located. Thanks for the tip, Kurt.

Doug, I did already have you down for lunch/malts and will add your friend Doug. How confusing!
So far, we're looking at possibly 15 for lunch with friends/spouses (11 CNers)!
Darrell, I think the pool is in a building down near the lower field, I remember seeing it on the map.

This sounds like there'll be a good crowd of us, then.
I went and got my US$ this lunchtime. The notes are small compared to UK ones...but they're nicer.

Oh, Faith, I hadn't thought about the difference in money! I don't know what the official exchange rate is, but if you'd like, bring some UK money with you, that would be cool to "exchange" some of the different paper denominations and coins! If you have any Euros, I'd love to see one/some of those, too. I'm not particularly a collector, I just like seeing what other countries have.

I'm interested in Euros! I want to see those too.
I got pretty much every currency from the western EU countries (FR, BE, NE, GER, AUS, IT, SW, BE, SP to name some) before they went to the Euro system. They are way more colorful than the US money. The only annoying thing is that the size of the bills goes larger as the denomination gets larger, some so large that it doesn't fit in my wallet.

I have a few Euro coins left over from my trip to the Netherlands last year, I'll try and remember to bring them with me, as well as a Brit note or two.
Have you ever seen Australian money? Talk about colorful! I went there in 1997 and was pretty taken with the appearance of the notes. They come in blue, green, red, yellow...

Australian money also has a wierd feel to it. Also the one dollar and two dollar coins took some getting use to.

I'm going to Australia 2 weeks after TSP. My brother tells me their money is plastic and will melt in the sun.
TSP is almost here! I'm meeting Alvin after work tomorrow to pick up our rental van. We'll load it Wednesday and Thursday, and then we start our trek eastward.

I can bring some of my EU cash for Show and Tell too.
I used to go there a couple times a year in the past to meet with my work collegues at Belgium. Now my responsiblity level at work changed, so I'm focused in systems here in the States.
