That's pretty neat!

If I am not mistaken, there are several other variable stars of note in the Orion Nebula, among the other brighter stars not far from the Trapezium.

Actually, two members of the Trapezium are eclipsing binaries.
Theta 1 A = V1016 Ori (type: EA, 6.7 - 7.7, period: 65 days).
Theta 1 B = BM Ori (type: EA, 7.9 - 8.7, period: 6.5 days).

There are some more variables brighter than 10 mag. around M42, and a lot more of fainter ones.
Not far from the nebula is S Ori - a long period variable
(more than 400 days), irregular variables T Ori and LP Ori lie within the nebula. These are good to observe while admiring the beauty of the Great Nebula. I like also KX Ori because it lies in the Running Man nebula.

I have been waiting for a chance to see this event for a number if years. Each time sky conditions were not favorable. Same again for this Feb. No luck.
There are others that I have had success with. A list of EB'S and Cepheids that I try to observe cane be fould on my simple web page at http://members.aol.com/sabiajohn/lasnews.html

Next eclipse of variable star V1016 (Theta Orionis A in the Trapezium of stars of M42) will soon be here. Mid-eclipse will be on January 9, 2006 at 3:13 UT, according to my sources. The Moon will be 2 days past First Quarter phase.
