Deciding between a used 300d or 10d new
      #832938 - 02/19/06 06:00 PM

Ok I know the 10d has the mirror lock funtion that I believe some 300d users use the Russian hack to get. Besides that what are thoughts about either camera. Really don't hear about a lot of folks buying the 10d.

Thanks

300D probably has lower noise. Also, any future filter modifications are a lot easier.

I made the same decision last year and went with the 300D

What about the same question between a 350D and 20D?

Me and the wife are quitting smoking (Yeah!) and she added up what we spend in a year. She turns to me and says "So what are you doing with your $2400.??? !!!! $$$ !!!

I have some ideas!

Haha thanks Jeff but that is way above my budget. I have some plans for the future if this camera works out. Don't need that much $$$ wrapped up in a camera when I can hardly even get a clear night as it is.

Congratulations to you and your wife on escaping that nasty habit.

I have no concept of what cigarettes cost... $2400 in a year sounds like you smoke alot or those things are really expensive.

To me, the benefits of mirror lock are over rated.. The same effect can be gained simply by covering your scope opening for the first and last few seconds of exposure, there by nullifing any mirror shake that may occur when starting or stopping your shot..

I would recommend the 300D.. You will not be dissapointed..

You are part of my inspiration there. No new photos from you? Probably the way I'll go.

Robert:

The fence in my back yard is the Indiana state line.. I buy there... LOT CHEAPER... But still, $33. a carton when on sale, $40 when not, and between me and her, we smoke about 2 cartons a week...

Anyways... From what I've seen, I can get the 350D (with a lens) for just under a grand... The 20D with lens for 1450... Of course, when the time comes, they SHOULD be cheaper. (About 2-3 months at my best guess.)...

So what are the pros and cons with these? Anyone have any astro-pics I can see with both 350 and 20D? Hopefully (and grasping here) with an LX200 10"?

Good luck Jeff. You can do it! After 1-1/2 days w/o smokes, I went so crazy, I ordered an RCX. The rest is history. The first week is the hardest. After that, its all down hill. You gotta go cold turkey, too. No patches or gum.

True for long exposure DSO stuff but not true for lunar or solar imaging. Lockup really benefits there.

Well looks like I'll be getting myself a 300D. Found one with low actions so it should do the job for me. Thanks to everyone for the info.

Heck Jeff for that price get the 20D. I thought you were looking at the 20Da.

Actually, I guess I should also ask,...

When you buy either cam, I have options (with price differences) as to which lens I would want with it. Is there something I should know about lenses? Do I want a widefield, or telephoto? What lens would be a nice "All around" lens for home use, and still do nice astro-pics for widefield use?

Jeff, the 17-85 EF-S/IS, is a nice lens. It is image stablized and has the ultrasonic motors. I think it is worth the extra over the 18-55EF-S. That is more or less a throw away lens.
However, if you get the body only, then some nice L glass will do wonders on astro. Nice color correction, ED-flourite.
My 100-400 is like a little refractor.

Well Ok.... Seeing as that is a 600 lens, I can do the 350D and still keep within the 1400... But to do the 20D, I'm now up to 1900...

Hmmmm.... Lets hope prices come down.. I'd still like to get other accessories with my plan here...

Yup that blows my budget. I'll have to stick with the basic lens for daylight for now. Hey Jeff whenever your ready come over and we can compare views thru our scopes. Plus if you have the 20D we can compare cameras also. That is when the weather gets a little warmer than it is now.

Yeah, thats it... Buy the 20D just so we can do a side by side comparison..

I'll probably do the 20D anyways... I like what I've been hearing and seeing. But the 350 seems to be making a LOT of appearances lately.. Lots of pics here, as well as in the magazines... So who knows... It all depends on prices and other "Specials" that may come in in the next few months...

And *Word deleted by the CN gnaughties gnomes* that weather! It was 50 last week, SUB ZERO the last 2 days, and were looking at upper 40's later this week!... Make up your mind already!!!
