Mike, we are talking about the Cold Water turnout. If there is snow, that area should be plowed as well. I have no desire to move large amounts of equipment up an icy path...but that's just me...

I would have been freaking out in that small plane with the same thoughts you expressed.

Yo, Capital *M*.

I may have jumped ship on the idea of going down together, cause my family wants to do some extra camping that weekend, and we have reservations at Silver lake.

We will be going down friday afternoon, after the kiddies get out of school. We will be setting up in the field just behind out camp site for friday night, and will be pulling stakes to come up the road to meet at Castle lake view point for Saturday.

We have some friends who are camping with us, and they will drive their minivan up from our camp site to see us that evening.

Again we will be camping sunday night at Silver lake.
And viewing with the scopes. You're welcome to join.

Hi Guys and Gals,

Sorry to change subject...but... ...I picked up one of the new 7mm TMB planetary EPs today at NEAF. Quite good, and I'll be bringing it to MSHSP for your testing pleasure. And if anyone was wondering, a new Paragon 40mm made it to the show, with the whole series available within the week or so. I got to extensively test it in a new 80mm TMB prototype and it blows away anything at twice the price (if you know what I mean). I could detect no distortion or lateral color, but only the demo made it, so mail order will be the only option. I was told that the shorter the focal length in the series, the better the quality gets, if that is possible. The coatings reflect almost no on axis color and appear black. At $250 it is literally a steal IMHO.

See you all soon.

No 40mm Paragon, then? Darn! I look forward to seeing the 7mm...guess I need to bring my 8" Dob to verify it!

Welcome to CloudyNights, jacat!

You're most welcome to attend and no registration is necessary.

But..... it's at the Castle Lake Viewpoint not at Coldwater ridge. I just want to make sure that everyone is clear on this. The details have been added to the first post in this thread.

Alright, since I messed up the location, let me repost it here:

Quote:

Where:
As of now the location is still the Castle Lake Viewpoint. The Castle Lake Viewpoint is located at mile post 40, just west of (before) the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center, along State Route 504. I haven't heard any bad news from the Forest Service about our staying overnight.

http://www.cleardarksky.com/lp/MntStHlns1WAlp.html (Light pollution map)

The Castle Lake viewpoint is midway between Elk Rock and the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center, see map.
Vincinity map

Castle Lake Viewpoint is directly above the word "Hummocks" in this detailed map.

Welcome,

As it looks the last time I checked, there are still one or two RV places available, I don't know about the camping area.

Check out the site Silverlake-resort.com Or call 360 274-6141.
I'm in site RV-10 and my friend is in site RV-11. From what I gather there is a play field behind us.

Sure, playin it loose, and being spontanious is all the fun of it.

I talked to the mangt of the RV park, and told them I'd be setting up my scope in any available place behind my site, and they said *cool*.

I'm not sure about how much space I will have in front of my RV for anyone who wants to visit for viewing, but I am sure the boat trailor park next to us will have room.

I think they will be accommodating.

I still haven't seen the site personally, and from the map, it looks nice and clear. I also can't vouch for the light pollution control. I assume there will not be any flood lights.

But you never can tell.

Thanks for the welcome and looking forward to this shebang!

And thanks even more for the correction of the location... I’m such a sloppy reader sometimes....

As for the intellect thing, sorry ‘bout that, no insult intended, haha!

Besides, if you only knew how little I know about Astrolog...I mean, uhm, A-s-t-r-o-n-o-m-y (and I was sooo hoping I could get my official horriblescope done while there or at least my fortune read!)

Am seriously thinking a trip down there this weekend (Sunday) from Kent might just be worthwhile.....

And Rob, thanks for the Silver Lake website, I’ll check it out tonight.

Hi All,

OK I'm back from my rather busy PA excursion. Here is a pic of the 5.5 inch refractor that is currently en route from PA to OR. Despite it's looks, remember this...the maker of this instrument had an unusual philosophy on scopes, build the best set of optics and put them in the cheapest, most rugged assembly possible. This may be a learned Depression Era habit where money isn't wasted on frivilous things like paint (except tube interiors ). When asked in the early 70's "Why don't you finish the scope?" the reply was "It IS finished."

The lens is hand ground and finger retouched from two blanks of military spec glass that gives color correction about 1/3 better than a standard crown and flint achromat of similar size. It has less color than a 4" TV Renaissance non-apo petzval that I was testing side-by-side. The focuser is machined for slip focus and the lens cell is machined aluminum also. Although uncoated, the doublet spacing is calculated to give virtually no reflections. I was so impressed, I insured it for $1,250. Crazy? Make that judgement after looking through it (please).

By the time it makes its way to MSHSP, the tube and mount should be painted and the tripod sanded and stained. This set up is about as far removed from the polished perfection of Rob's 6" beauty as obsidian knives are to surgical steel (although both are devastatingly sharp ).

Sorry for going on and on about this thing, but it is very exciting to be the next owner of a great performer like this.

Keith
