Congrats on your new cam! WcCtrl also works with the SPC900. I recommend you download it. The sliders are numbered

Chris,
Updated my ToUCam THANKS! Only had one problem for some reason after I saved my old BIN I couldn't find the SPC900 one. For some reason I was saving to the 8116 folder not the 8112 so I just copied the new BIN to that folder & loaded it up. It didn't go the first time but went on the second load.
By the way do you know what are the Macros are in the WcRmac program? One of them is labled Color RAW mode. Can this make the camera work in raw mode?

Glad to hear it worked for you Thomas!
Macros "hack" the camera. The ToUcam automatically process (sharpening/color) your image before it leaves the cam. With the macros you can turn this off. You basically get more control over your images
As far as I know, there are no specific 900nc macros around yet but they will come
Some can’t wait though and have tried - with mixed results.

Why do you guys think that YUV2 is any better then YUV or RGB24? It is impotrant how camera transfers data through USB cable. If camera uses something like YUV then using YUV2 makes no sense. Does anyone tried to compare 2 codecs?

The YUY2 gives you less compression, Dennis. If the webcam can’t handle the YUY2 compression you won’t be able to use it
According to the site that first mentioned it: "A 100 frame AVI at 640x480 is about 65Mb with the YUY2 codec, compared to 45Mb with I420 or IYUV". So there has to be more info in the YUY2 movie.

I am really bad at explaining stuff like this. Someone else will do it better

The problem with the ToUcam is that you have no idea what the settings are for Gain, Gamma and so on, so you have to guess every time. In WcCtrl the sliders are numbered so it’s easier to remember what settings you were using. You can also save settings that worked well for Jupiter and Saturn.

Not a fancy program or anything but it can save you some time.

What I'm saying is that probably it's not the camera that uses YUV or YUV2 encoding. Camera chip transfers data in some internal format to a driver and PC driver converts it to YUV, I420 or something else. And there is no guarantee that YUV2 is any better than YUV in this situation. E.g. you need only 8 bits to transfers 256 states, but you can use 16 bits, or even more. But you are not transferring more information you are just wasting "space" and bandwidth. To make long story short… Does anyone have an idea of how to check picture quality with YUV and YUV2 codecs not by frame size.

Dennis,

SAA8116 has enough internal logic to (unless raw) de-mosiac, color space conv, basic image processing, encode the resulted image into various transmission format then send the data stream thru the USB 1.1 Bus to the PC. The driver on the PC side decodes such transmission format into a frame buffer for display and/or for further processing.

Clear Skies!

I happened on your advice on the Phillips SPC900NC webcam. I have one but cannot get a clear picture with it. They are all a bright light with no detail. I use a Celestron StarSeeker 100 and a barlow. I would like to take pictures just like yours. Mike
